Excellent GGP results for Team EcoModder

I can't believe that neither I nor any other Ecomodder at the GGP has posted this yet here: We did extremely well in the 2016 Green Grand Prix.

To the best of my knowledge, every EcoModder who participated in the competition won AT LEAST one award. I doubt that any participating school or commercially sponsored team did as well. We really owe ourselves a bunch of mutual slaps on the back. I mean, really!

Here's my report, based on my recollection of the awards given out at the post event dinner. Please, if I've missed any awards, or if I'm mis-stating anything here, please reply either here or by PM, and I'll do my best to straighten it up in this post. And please remember to give me your car type, screen name and real name, if I've missed you in this writeup. I can't match them up if I'm not told!

Mike Loveland - mloveland78 -1993 Civic VX - First in Class for MPG
Steven - UltArc - Aero Modded Mustang V6 - First in Class for mpg
Matt Hooler - DrGreenthumb - First in Class for MPG (stock 3 cyl hybrid, Insight)
Robert Acevedo - sheepdog 44 - navigated for Steve/UltArc
Not-So-Crazy Jerry - changzuki - Centurion/'74 FIAT X1/9, tiny diesel:
- Most Innovative Vehicle award.
- I think Jerry also won top mpg in his class?
Dave - redneck - 2001 Dodge 3500 modded I-6 Cummins diesel dually flatbed truck - I swear that flatbed has to be 8 feet across:
- First in Class for mpg.
- Dave also did crucial work on Steve's AeroStang just prior to the competition.
Bruce Pick, Steve P. navigating - brucepick - 2000 Honda Insight, modded:
- First in Class for mpg
- Third place overall for TSD road rally
Juha Cantori - Gasoline Fumes - didn't drive this year. Took soon-to-be award winning photos of the GGP.

In UltArc's master list above -
#7 Insight 2000 87.6 Hybrid - was driven by Matt Hooler; listed on the GGP data sheet as an EcoModder. Matt just seems to be pretty quiet here. I don't know his EM screen name.

Concerning car#1 the so called rolling battery Prius with the decal on the back claiming it gets "800 mpg!" that got 285.95mpge at the GGP.

So when Bob announced the #1 Prius, he said it used 3/4 of a gallon of gas (25.275kwh equivalent) and 11.7kwh from the battery pack at 36.9kwh total energy consumption over 99.8 miles. 36.9kwh is equivalent to 1.1 gallons of gas for a final score of 90.72 mpge.

Well maybe i misheard and he only used 1/4 of a gallon of gas? That would be equivalent to 8.425kwh from gas + 11.7kwh from battery = 20.125kwh total. Convert to gasoline .597 gallons equivalent for a final score of 167.16mpge.

So how did he get 285.95mpge over 99.8 miles? That would require exactly 0.349 of a gallon of gas which is equivalent to 11.7kwh! Wait, 11.7kwh is exactly the amount announced he used solely from the battery! Ergo 285.95mpge is a complete BS number that IGNORES all gasoline used.

If 285.95mpge at 45mph average would propel a pure electric vehicle to mass adoption across the country, getting 2.5X the efficiency of the city rating of a Nissan Leaf, instantly ending our dependence on fossil fuels! Then you know something just doesn't add up.

According to official numbers he used .16 gallons of gas (5.392kwh) + 15.84kwh from the battery = 21.232kwh (.63 gallons of gas equivalent) total over 99.8 miles for a final score of 158.4mpge.

800 mpg prius

I was there behind this prius when they refilled at tops. He did use 0.7 some gallons at the event. Sheepdog's estimate of 90.72 is correct.

.

I had a great time at the GGP and enjoyed meeting everyone.

I was however slightly surprised with my results.

I figured a last place finish was likely since I was driving a whale.

I was wrong...

I was denied that title by a modded 2005 V-6 gas Ford Ranger that posted 22.43 mpg for the track event.

The Dodge truck I was driving weighed 5000 pounds more than the Ford Ranger, yet it somehow achieved 22.67 mpg at the event.

A scant .24 mpg better...

So much for the coveted last place finish.

As Maxwell Smart would say "Missed it by that much".

The other surprising thing was that they presented me with an award for "Best in class".

Why was I surprised...???

Could it have been the vehicle...???

Driving skill...???

MPG...???

Or for some other merit...???

Well, no...

It"s because I was the only one in that class... Lol...

However, getting something is always better than nothing...

Besides, it will look good hanging in the shop.

If your thinking of attending the next GGP .

Just do it.

You won't regret it...
