OEM Partial Kammback (on 2012 Chevy Aveo / Sonic)

The Chevy Sonic will replace the Chevy Aveo as the smallest offering in the GM line up. There's a nice trend to extend roof line of new hatchback designs for cleaner aero numbers. The Sonic has a nicely integrated vestigial Kamm-wing familiar to many eco-modders.

I like it. That looks like an EU Chevy Aveo car show design. I think that means its a rename of the "next gen Aveo".

Ha ha, the Chevy Sonic should become the official car of the Sonic fast food chain!

I thought the same thing, botsapper.

Could be better (longer), but the Kamm extension is still entirely moddable by future Aveo / Sonic owners.

Here's a photo of the production version of the car:

This car will continue to be called Aveo everywhere else in the world (~50 countries); just "Sonic" in North America.

It's definitely a step in the right direction in terms of aerodynamic improvements.

I actually like that...and would own one. but what are the chances that it will actually be light and have a small/efficient motor in it?

Light? Zero chance.

Small efficient motor? Only if you live in Europe They're offering 2 diesel mills with start-stop in this platform across the pond. 6 engine choices, actually:

Gasoline/petrol:
1.2 L @ 70 hp
1.2 L @ 86 hp
1.4 L @ 100 hp
1.6 L @ 115 hp

Diesel, featuring Start/Stop technology:
1.3 L @ 75 hp
1.3 L @ 95 hp

However...

GM North America has stated in the past that this new "Aveo" would get class-leading fuel economy. (They say lots of things though.)

I could potentially see them doing an "ECO" version of this car, using the same 1.4 turbo and tall geared 6-spd manual or automatic that they use in the Cruze ECO. Maybe they'll throw the other aero tricks at it, like the Cruze ECO:

-- slightly lowered,
-- variable automated grille block,
-- aero wheels.

We may know more in a week or so when the North American market production version of the Sonic shows up at the Detroit auto show.

Adding a extension to that short Kammback would not be hard. Take that one off, use it as a template and make a 2' one

Ibid. If taking it off is not feasible for whatever reason, it's a great mount point a kamm-extension as others have said.

I wonder if GM will be so bold as to offer a longer extension if they do an ECO model of the Sonic/Aveo.

Volvo did it with the "efficiency" version of the C30 hatchback. Different spoiler from the "regular" (sport) model:

vs.
