I have some free poly 15 gallon jugs, used to carry soap. fill them on trips or when there's a storm in the gulf. only prob is there's no vent but diesel isn't affected as bad. some are for water only.
used to run a 100 gallon tank in the truck bed. after I filled up the attendant would have this dumb kind of look on their face. back when diesel was about 1.25 a gallon.

Dad has some large gas cans. I think the one in my trunk is five gallons. He used to fill up all of them, but he said that he grew tired of the smell.

Is there a trick to using fill cans? I always spill when I put the gas in my car.

I spill enough fuel in the Army!

A little update... the shenanigans at the pump continue. I got 60c/gallon off this month. Disappointing. I'll have to be more on my game next month. But, I've saved about $80 now, so the gas cans are paid for and it's pure profit from here on out.

I'm also trying to drive less in the spirit of Mustachianism. Hopefully I'll make it through September on one 15.6 gallon tank.

Lifetime fuel cost is 4.7c/mile.

I'm contemplating another storage tank for E85 because I've read that modern engines can handle up to 20% ethanol. Ethanol is dirt cheap and I'm guessing a small quantity won't hurt mileage much because of the timing advance. I would blend the ethanol with gas at home.

Would the ethanol shenanigans be worthwhile? Prob not, but I like the concept of ethanol and fu** gasoline.

Very interesting shenanigans indeed! You have to watch some of those fuel discount promos. Murphys around here do something like buy 3 coke products for $4 and save 10 cents a gallon. In order for that to pay off, I would have to roll my diesel work rig with both tanks dry for that to pay off, and then I might beat them for 40 cents.

Nothing exciting to report this month because I didn't even stop for gas. 43 days on a single tank, that's probably a new record for me. And I have a road bike on order so I can start commuting and cut my fuel costs even more.

But a recent, cleverly devious scheme might get my fuel costs even lower (as gas prices tick back up...) A grocery chain around here offers fuel discounts based on how much crap you buy in a month, up to $1/gal on up to 35 gallons.

Now, I can only fill 15 gallons at a time in my Cruze. But I bought 20 gallons worth of gas cans on eBay for $75. When they arrive, I'll take advantage of the full 35 gallons. Plus I'll only stop for gas about once/month. Finally, because I buy more groceries in the extended timeframe, my "fuel points" should double.
I hope you're not letting the gas sit too long and get phase separation

I do a similar thing for winter. I blend my biodiesel with diesel to keep it from freezing, so I fill a 30 or 55 gallon drum with discounted diesel. I've got enough blended fuel stored to get through the winter and spring now.

I don't find that the grocery store fuel discounts (Fred Meyer and Safeway around here, maybe others) are worthwhile. The stores which offer the discount charge more for the groceries and such that you have to buy to earn the discount thereby completely negating the fuel savings. Do you really think you're outsmarting their accounting department? I fill my tank and a majority of my pantry at Costco.
