As Ben said mowers are very easy to convert. Motenergy even makes a permanent magnet motor that has an extended 1" shaft just like most small engines have that will drop right into most mowers. The cost is low and the maintenance is... well virtually nothing (gotta grease zerks every once in a while)! Just plug it in and it works. I LOVE mine.

Riding lawn mowers and electric motorcycles are actually pretty similar technology.
Really, the only difference is that you usually use a chain on a cycle and a belt on a mower.
Also, the cycle goes faster, but it can't mow the lawn, so I suppose that's a trade-off.
In all seriousness though, both are excellent "getting started in electric vehicles" projects!

Chain that to the front and put the bike in 1st gear. It'll do something.

This just in....
My instructional DVD, BUILD YOUR OWN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE, is now available at Amazon.com.
I could really use positive user reviews of the video.
If you have purchased that DVD, or just really like what I have done on this project, please visit Amazon and leave a positive review!

Great work on the Electric conversions and the DVD/instructionals, Ben. You're really getting somewhere with this stuff!

Thanks Christ!
Is most recent news, I've been invited to the Vienna University of Business and Economics to participate in a brainstorming and workshop project they are hosting. It's sponsored by Magna Powertrain, which is a major manufacturer of car parts. They are also the people responsible for much of the work on the Ford Focus Electric.
The conference is sort of an open framework to come up with ideas on the next generation of hybrid electric car drivelines.
I got a call out of the blue from the University, inviting me there. I explained that I am NOT an industry expert, nor do I have a degree in ANYTHING - I'm just some guy working on projects in his driveway. The contact told me that they were impressed with my blog and videos and they were looking for people that "how you you say.... Thinking outside the box?"
Ok, if that's who they are looking for, I'm their man! See you in Vienna!
PS - I'll report back on Austrian beer for all you guys....
