Wow, I'm really surprised the TDI did so bad on that motortrend. It makes me quite suspicious of their test procedure (I didn't read the article).

new data
Did 600km today with hot weather (air con mandatory):
6.0 l/100km at 144 km/h (39.2 MPG US and 89.5 MPH) for 100km at a relatively stable speed (constant gas most of the time, road with slight slopes but seldom flat, light traffic)
7.4 l/100km at 160 km/h (31.8 MPG US and 99.4 MPH) for 230km, same highway and conditions, opposite direction.
I will post the photos when I'm allowed! The computer is, on average, 6% optimistic but the speed average is quite precise.
I also agree that the Jetta TDI data in the magazine is quite strange. My car is very similar (diesel engine, same power output, similar size, heavier), and returns much better results at stable speeds with not-so-optimal conditions. I understood that the testers corrected the final MPG value to account for the superior calorific content of diesel vs petrol (an arguable decision, I must say...), but it still seems that the values are too low.

I really find the TDI jetta to be suprising at higher speeds. My dad has a 2012 and averages 48-51 mpg at 70 mph depending on conditions. Perhaps they included a mpg reduction for the higher cost for for diesel over gasoline.

1997 BMW 328i
First Chart
Thanks to MetroMPG for the chart. I tested my car in the same location he does. I ran everything twice. It was a nice crisp night around 32f with zero traffic either way. (Maybe one car going the other way)
I noticed my 90km/h run both times was way off. (I might have left it in fourth gear) so tried 90km/h another night and used that data. Originally it spiked up and since then I can't reproduce it. The Scanguage was brand new to me so likely I was distracted.
Scanguage is not calibrated yet. It seems to be pretty close to what the on board analogue fuel consumption gauge is showing. (In the Calibration tank now)

Thanks for posting that.
Interesting: another car where you have to really be moving before you fall below the EPA highway rating (26 mpg).

2005 Ford Focus ZX3 Speed/MPG Chart for 5th gear
2005 Ford Focus ZX3, five speed, all season tires, no aero mods.
Chart data comes from long steady speed highway trips, not instantaneous mileage.
