Spotted! 2016 Chevrolet Volt pre-production model. Spied (and sat in) in Toronto

I'm visiting Toronto with family this weekend and happened to see a 2016 Volt roll up to the door of the hotel we're staying at (not very far from GM Canada's headquarters):

("I see you see me!")

First thought: Cool! That's the first 2nd gen Volt I've seen.

Second thought: Wait a minute, I don't think these are on sale yet!

Third thought: Get a picture!

The driver saw me playing paparazzo, hopped out with a smile on his face and introduced himself. Turns out he's a GM engineer evaluating a pre-production model. The 2016's won't actually be available until later this year.

He was a super friendly guy, and invited me to sit in the driver's seat and check it out ... while his young daughter was snoozing in the back seat.

"Don't judge it on fit & finish," he suggested. I was only inside for a moment, but I didn't see anything out of place. He told me about the increased electric range, and how he had unfortunately already run the battery down in his driving today.

He chuckled when I told him that while I haven't even had a chance to try a 1st gen Volt yet, I did drive a GM EV for about 6 years... the ForkenSwift.

Looks less chunky than the first Volt. And ~53 miles of EV range is much better than ~38 miles.

Good looking car, actually. Conventionally good looking, like a cross between a 2cd Gen Insight and the Kompressor Mercedes hatch I used to see around a lot.

I see a lot of the latest Civic sedan in the new Volt. Not a bad thing. Definitely more mainstream looking than the 1st gen. (Though I also liked the look of the 1st gen.)

I know it's subjective, but I bet more people would say the 2016 Volt wins the styling contest against the 2016 Prius.

What car wouldn't win that contest

I still fail to see the case for the extremely limited E-range plug-in cars - other than cheating @ the emission standards test.

Ecomodder exclusive! The latest trend seems to be creeping amoeba lens plastic. Hmmm is all I have to say about that.

Good job on the photo, although getting punched by the GM guy would have been better for ratings.

I like how they've raised the rear deck closer to the template.

Making it look better than the '16 Prius is a high, slow pitch. The front end has become unnecessarily busy looking.
