Fuel Economy Facts and Myths - GM Techlink
Although it is impossible to predict the effects of adding various chemical additives to gasoline in an attempt to increase fuel economy, often the results can be damaging.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 show 6.2L V8 engine components that were run for less than 3000 miles on gasoline that had a small amount (less than 1%) biodiesel added to it.

I was reading an article that mixing gas with diesel was a great idea.

My grandpa used to tell me stories about "The Great Depression" about how they would burn kerosene in their Model T's. They started on gasoline and switched over to kerosene when the engine got to running temp.

You grand father must of been rich. My mothers fathers started his model t on turpentine, then once it warmed up switched to lamp oil. Luckily Mr Ford included a timing adjustment in addition to an idle or throttle adjustment so you can tune for the fuel you are burning. Once fuel #2 is up to its point of becoming voiltle it burns like gasoline.

Final report on this experiment, which I have concluded today. The vehicle now has 153,841 miles, has experienced no mechanical damage and continues to run superbly. Oil consumption is less than 1 qt / 5,000 miles and fuel consumption on regular gasoline, unladened on my reference highway travels returns to the 15.5 mpg experienced prior to conducting the diesel addition experiment.

I have stopped the experiment due to two factors. First, the price difference between diesel and gasoline has disappeared, reducing my financial incentive. Second, the last fueling station conveniently available to me which has a small diameter diesel fuel nozzle has replaced that nozzle with one of the standard large diameter diesel nozzles. Using a large diameter nozzle at the fuel island takes way too much time, or requires I carry a funnel which then makes the interior of my van smell of diesel. I have stopped my experiment because it is no longer sufficiently financially rewarding to overcome the inconvenience.

Beginning odometer: 75,231
Ending odometer: 153,841
Distance: 78,610 miles

Blended fuel consumed: 4,543.9 gallons
Blend mixture = 70 gasoline to 30 Diesel
Miles/gallon on blend mixture: 17.3 overall

Miles/gallon on 85 octane gasoline: 15.5

I know this is an old thread, but I mixed in 1 gallon of diesel in my 20 gallon tank of my 1999 Infiniti Q45 and saw no change in fuel economy in heavy city driving.

I also mixed in 4 gallons in my 40 gallon tank in my suburban while towing a 1400 mile trip and I saw no change in mileage. I am going to try mixing more diesel into the suburban on future non-towing trips after I have done a few eco-mods because I do think that lindsay jim may be on to something.

I am more interested in mixing waste motor oil or ATF with gas to reduce waste.

In one situation, before I was familiar with my unreliable fuel gauge, I ran out of gas about 8 miles away from a gas station!

All I had was 1.5 quarts of new engine oil so I dumped it in the tank, and fired up the engine on fumes and drove to the gas station. It was smoking out the tailpipe but not as bad as i would have thought. I'm sure that it mixed with the gas at the bottom of the tank, so it wasn't PURE OIL.

This was on a TBI fuel injected setup so the injectors have a high flow rate and aren't easily clogged like smaller MPFI injectors.

Lol.
If i hadn't been out in the middle of New Mexico, I would have stopped for gas a lot sooner!

They are horrible at posting signs when there is a large stretch of nothing. I think it was over 80 miles between stations on that stretch. o.O
