Going back to the degrees of advance info... I tried to purchase a custom sprocket from 3T but they haven't responded to my two emails...

So, for all of you out there who want to advance your cam for free here's the how to...

My factory cam gear has 40 teeth...
360 degrees divided by 40 teeth = 9degrees per tooth

So with ALL timing markings in the correct locations, I've made a new marking 1 tooth offset towards the direction of rotation (advance). This is now my "NEW" timing mark for the cam sprocket only, crank remains in TDC position.

Then I removed the belt and aligned cam sprocket with the "NEW" timing position for an effective cam advance of +/- 9 degrees... for FREE

IF ANYONE HAS ANY VALID REASONS WHY THIS IS INCORRECT... SPEAK NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE

Cam degree per tooth is 9 degrees but you have to consider that the crankshaft goes around twice for every one rotation of the cam shaft which translates to 18 crank degrees instead of 9 and advance/retard is based on crank degrees. Hope that helps.

Yep, and 18 degrees is a metric shizload of change. I would be careful about valves and pistons getting intimate in unintended ways. Have you checked the clearnace?

But I have re-started my 93 Geo Metro project and wanted to share.

I drive 120 miles round trip to work everyday, and for obvious reasons a good fuel efficient vehicle helps.

I had owned a 91 Metro Convertible earlier in life, and I knew a bit about them then... so when I ran across my metro in 2011 I knew I had to make it into a reliable mode of transportation. I purchased the car for $200, not running but body was in excellent shape. It has factory 12's and was automatic.

Some tome in 2012 I purchased a second parts car metro with a non working engine and missing body panels and engine components and no wheels... But it had what I was looking full manual transmission setup... Bought that 2nd car also for $200.

So I have already performed the manual tranny swap back in 2012, and fixed the engine issues, and had it on the road for about 3wks and was loving it... but it started loosing compression in cyl #3... and loosing 1/3 of your power output on a Geo is not fun... So I parked the car, pulled the engine with intentions of completely rebuilding engine and transmission...and life has happened but I have been hanging on to both of my Geos for the last 5yrs against my wife's advice... Knowing that one day...

So the day arrived... last week I brought the car in my garage and it is currently undergoing massive heart surgery, but plan to have it on the road in the next two weeks.

My ULTIMATE goal with this project is to use it as a test bed and take all the lessons learned and apply them to an ELIO to get at least 120mpg.. so I can drive back and forth to work for 1gl us a day...

But in the mean time I have challenged myself to reach a 100MPG goal with this project... So, much work will be required but, it will be fun

THANKS EVERYONE!!! Complete brain-fart on my part...

I knew it was 2:1 ratio, but complettly forgott (obviously) to think throuhg how that relationship would affect the event timing... That's what happens when you start improvising@ 2am...

I tried.... Now to figure how to accurately meassure 5degrees and drill/slot a new hole

Pretty easy. Buy a degree wheel, bolt it onto the crank and follow any number of videos on how to degree a cam. Measure what the stock one's timing is then slot and play from there. A cheap way is to search google images for a degree wheel, print, glue onto a bit of tin or card and play...

You can also buy offset dowels and bushings - once you know the amounts talk to your local hotrod engine builder.

Thanks, I already own a motorcycle engine degree wheel so that's a plus... I will have to look into the offset dowels and bushings before I start improvising some more... Thanks

I purchased a economy grind cam and a +10 from 3tech many years ago. I was very happy with the cam and gear, it did exactly as advertised. My car gave the best fuel economy with this setup. It is the best way to replicate an Xfi cam.
Mike has a full time job so he can be slow to respond to e-mail.
