rolled a caprice on ice. That story got to me. I have had that body class out of control. It really sucks.

I chose subaru, to answer your question. The math is much like v8s play it...or any boxer for that matter.

for ecomod, it needs older, ashame, but geos and "classic" hondas are getting old too. Carbs are the champs.
most all ecomod is cheap, no luxury.

my '86 accord cost me $600. it's a carb. it looks pretty good inside and out...
but this may have been a rare deal. and it cost more than $600 after i put 4 new tires on it. i did tune ups and anything else i possibly could to not make my cheap car more than cheap.

Carbureted cars are much overrated. They run filthy rich when cold, in the hands of the average user. Their idle circuits frequently gum up, needle valves stick, floats leak, and you had to rebuild them regularly.

I'll take a fuel injected car any day over a car with (ugh) carbs, let alone a car with dual carbs, or (shudder) triple carbs.

Any perceived advantage of carbureted cars excelling in fuel economy is likely due to the fact that a 1970 Datsun 1200 weighed about 1600 lbs v. a 2009 Sentra weighing about 2800 lbs, and being larger than the 1970 Datsun 510. It's not due to carburetors being more efficient than fuel injection.

What to look for in an "ecomodding" car.

4/5/6 speed (standard) with a pretty steep overdrive
3/4 cylinder, under 2.5L
lowish Cd
Under 2200 lbs preferably under 2000lbs

Older diesel VW's are a good choice too, pretty much anything diesel with surpass the gas "brother" in MPGs.

So what about a 2.5L V6, which would have more torque at lower RPM than a 2.5L I4? Allowing for more loading and lower RPMs during short shifting, making acceleration more efficient... (Chrysler has both.)

Bustin my balls Christ, bustin my balls.

I think it all depends on the application, and the other factors. (length/speed/terrain of the commute) Most of the time, I would suggest the I4.

What would be your suggestion? I4 or V6?

I am currently googling the two...

Are these the right engines?
