While others were celebrating and honoring US patriotism during the holiday. I was reading about bug engines. This is a handy picture to stash away for future consideration.

Then I was browsing a couple random searches and found this one.

I drove one of those once. Aluminum body and a transverse rear seat. My mechanic at the time owned it and let me use it as a loaner. Then he sold it on without giving me a shot. It was copper with a red interior.

It had 30-odd thousand miles on it in the 1980s. It was the first time I'd driven a VW that didn't have sloppy shift linkage.

My weekly driver today, I drove as a loaner 10 years ago. It looks like I'm going to do a three-part process

purchase rotors and drums
get them cryogenically tempered
do a brake job

The most patriotic displacement is 90.5x69 (=1776). Stock bore for good cooling, stroker crank for low end torque and 10% more displacement. I've got one on the bench, it was built for a panel van I've sold on and currently reserved for the '58 Baja.

The rear doors are fronts turned around with an 11" stretch. There could be an additional stretch in the B-pillar, or it could be pillarless. Whoa, I've got a Beetle body for a donor! Maybe someday?

I inquired about a 2161, which is a popular type 2 engine for low end torque. Most people think in terms of wild HP claims, and giant displacement. I want low end torque so I can haul stuff and pull a trailer. Next I'm going to investigate 5 speeds. Then check on induction options. (Twin carbs are a waste in my world.) Its a process to create a list, then compare the What-Ifs to buying a new car. The numbers will make the decision...

That last one, with a side-draft carb or fuel injection throttle body would allow a very low floor for a pickup truck or van.

I agree with the type 3 cooling.

An interesting site. The HTML isn't 'old', it (over-)uses Divs instead of Tables. But not Flex-Box so it's shows a certain age. I suspect it was made in some page editor from all the cruft; and by someone who is colorblind.

I followed the link to the harvest gold beetle page and I was left thinking about coffee ice cream. Because the color of those pictures looks like coffee ice cream more than a shade of gold!
What a nice survivor that is. It makes me happy seeing survivors like that....

I like the look of the murdered beetle. But I would not want one black on black. its too hot in the summer time, and its a pain to keep clean.

Did you notice the tail-pipe sticking out behind the tire?

The 1957 Beetle in my avatar eventually had the front valance replaced and it was painted Black Imron enamel (fenders, doors and hood) and Harvest Gold (roof, door tops and rear deck). They didn't spray the metallic (or the clear) right and it came out as a flat metallic gold.

Still thinking about a pickup? This is how it's done in South America.

The cab is cut to fit the back of the seat. The sunroof is concave and results in a 'wickerbill' at the rear of the cab. Subtly sophisticated aerodynamically. It appears to be a snap-in canvas piece, but could as easily be slump-molded plexiglass.

I may have my head down between now and this weekend.
