I think I have figured out part of the problem. (PART of it.)

It seems to me, the "visual mass" of a car's headlight/running light area should not appear larger than the front wheel:



The Mirage G4 sedan has a similar proportions problem:

You may be right. It could also be the cowl height.

Compare with any stanced BMW. The front end wraps tightly around the leading edge of the tire.

Creases are a cost-cutting measure.

Granted, pressing creases costs money in terms of dies and high pressure stamping machines, but putting extra creases in a panel means you can use lighter, cheaper and softer metal than otherwise.

For an uncreased panel to have the same strength, you'd need it to be thicker or made with higher-strength steel.

Then there are the cars that are so cheap they forego the high-pressure stamping and simply use thicker panels of softer, cheaper steel.

Also, the Japanese wanted to make their products look as non-European as possible. The selected solution was to counter the Greek ideals of visual balance and harmony with the Ninja warrior armour tactic of violating aesthetic harmony with disjoint and anti-integrated lines, which was meant to distract an opponent.

How about Philippine Jeepneys? I was over there in 1978 and they were just using up the last of the WW2, Korea and Vietnam leftovers. Saw shops hand building new bodies out of stainless steel and aluminum. The owners put lots of money into metal horses to bolt onto the hoods. According to the tour guides, the Jeepney owners use those as an indicator of how prosperous they are.

Back to Japan, Dekotora! Apparently they don't have much government oversight of what kind of crap can be attached to semi trucks.
