I saw him at one of the car events a few years ago, think it was Eyes-On-Design, a small crowd gathered around him to hear what he had to say on some automotive topic. He is an automobile enthusiast, just not an EV one.

Also heard him as a guest on Autoline Detroit a PBS TV program, he was negative about EV's then too, which seemed very short sighted.

Even his observations about the Prius were based on their then modest market share, and the modest Hybrid market share of when the program was aired seven years ago.

I doubt that he has changed his mind, and probably feels puzzled at the fail of Hummer - and GM.

Not a futurist or a visionary by any measure, a brutal realist and a shortsighted one at that.

Perhaps best suited as a follower and not a leader.

EDIT: Oh yea almost forgot to mention, don't go exploring in your vintage Porsche and end up going down his driveway in Ann Arbor, he will only sneer at you for ignoring the private drive signs. Can't really expect a vintage car wave while trespassing I guess.

The 2013 solar car developed by Cambridge students has a more aerodynamic design, thanks to tracking solar panels at the back, which prevent any compromise on its shape. Credit: CUER

.............The car weights 120kg, and can reach a top speed of almost 140 kilometres per hour (almost 87 miles per hour), but needs about the same amount of power as a hairdryer. It achieves this by maximising efficiency at every level - for example, the motor is located in the hub of the wheel, eliminating the need for gears, chains or differentials which would lower its efficiency overall.

From this angle you can see a very futuristic aerodynamic feature... pressure released from underneath and through the front redirecting air over the windshield...

what to tell

Not who I would be going to for real industry advice.

I don't know what to tell you. I posted Tesla's gross margin, which is very high for the industry. But you're still going back to a failed executive -- who has a noted axe to grind about CAFE standards -- statement that Tesla is losing money on each car they sell.

Source for margins I posted:
How Tesla Motors Could Be Profitable if It Wanted To -- The Motley Fool
Bob Lutz says he has the highest opinion of Elon Musk. The bean-counters,who derive statistical quanta after bench-marking Musk's
cars are the one's whom see trouble ahead.
The federal tax credits for EVs ends after 200,000 units sold.
Elon Musk figures that the average sale for the Tesla-3 will be $43,000.GM and NISSAN are directly competing for Tesla's cult followers.
Selling Volts,Bolts ,and Jolts at a loss will allow GM to sell more high-profit gas-guzzling crossovers and SUVs.NISSAN as well.
Automakers have a legal, fiduciary responsibility to pay the highest dividend to the shareholder.Selling EVs at a loss is a way to ultimately make profits.
Your retired kindergarten teacher's pension fund income likely comes from profits derived by predatory automotive and oil corporate practices.
I'm not a fan of Mr.Lutz, nor an apologist, but he does share information which doesn't seem to surface elsewhere.
If information leads to knowledge, and knowledge leads to power,I'm open to all sources, even if I don't particularly respect the messenger.
I don't know what Tesla's 'net' numbers look like.

The concept dates to the 1930s,and W.I.Kamm's patent for such a concept.
(the openings at the base of the windshield is an extractor opening from the engine bay which energizes the boundary layer for the air passing over the windscreen)

If the rudder section of the vertical stableiser were adjustable on the fly could they provide forward thrust like one recently that would take across wind and use it for forward assist and under the right conditions as full proposition, I couldn't find the link...
