I discovered that site when preparing rendering for the FFR competition this spring. It is a great site, many hours can be spent studying the examples.

Clamshell/butterfly doors, they never caught on, sort of a pity. They were on a few concept cars in the early 1970's.

Ahh - the spanish gearbox - Manuel.

Although this looks nice, I would prefer a trad hatchback myself as it has the most practicality, and it keeps the rain out of the boot/trunk when loading/unloading in a hurry. Not all of us live in "design land".

When your trunk is 48" (1219mm) long it's kind of hard to reach things inside. It's not a matter of what looks best- it's a matter of making the cargo as accessible as possible. Maybe it'll have some sort of canopy that unfolds from the top seam when you open it.

George, you reminded me. I was going to enter the contest but never got my crap together in time. Here's a very sketchy rendition of my design.

That's better than 85-90% of the projects I've seen. Looks like human beings can fit in it, which surprisingly many submittals (the vast majority) failed to do.

The rules were real loose, a single view could have won.

(Something like a 4 seat EV1)

Here is a tiny sketch I did in my sketchbook. I can't really go too far drawing it because 2D=/=3D. The idea is like a Tatra 77: the body splits the air up and down, and the greenhouse splits it side to side.

I've already started a 3D computer model in Autodesk Alias. Screenshots when I get some more stuff done.

Possibly down the road I'd like to mill a 1:18 scale urethane foam model and test it in real life.

Very open to suggestions before I get too far in the model!

Stay tuned.
A 5-view sketch would really help,as you know, all this will affect the airflow over the form.

I'm trying to find the time to rough out a 3D computer model in Autodesk Alias as i learned a new technique that should work a lot better than the last try. Trouble is I'm always either gone all day or dead tired.

Thinking if I can get that model to look nice it will make the physical model that much easier to make, without all the guesswork.

Ok, thanks to Phil I got my butt in gear and pushed out this quick Alias model. By quick I mean rough, not speedy haha. The hard edges will need to be filleted and whatnot. This is just blocking in the basic form.

1 square = 100mm

This car fits the xB's dimensions in everything but length.

I'm pretty happy with the build itself too, as most of the surfaces are monorails and have very little math.

Having a nice discussion over engines and such. Anybody want to chime in about the 870cc FIAT Twin Air Turbo? Looks like it'll make more power/torque with the same fuel economy as Daihatsu's KR-FE.

Rough Model | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

So far:

Martin van Duijn

And the Daihatsu Cuore engine too. But what about 85 bhp Fiat 2-cilinder Twin Air Turbo?

Tyler Linner

Well, everyone knows FIATs are unreliable! The KR-FE was rated engine of the year so I think it'll do fine. Unless you think the TAT will give better mileage.

Martin van Duijn (32 minutes ago)

Its mileage is comparable with the Daihatsu engine that the Toy/Pug/Cit triplets use, but it is more powerful and faster: max. speed is 173 kmh, 0-100 kmh in just 11 seconds. Just imagine what it will do in such a sleek aero package.

Tyler Linner (25 minutes ago)

One of the other reasons was tight packaging. I'm going to have to look into this Twin Air setup. Can you imagine a 900cc engine pushing the car to perhaps 150mph? It would be governed to 90mph, though. There's no need to go faster than that on any highway, and it really really kills mileage.

Martin van Duijn (12 minutes ago)

The TwinAir has a max. torque of 145 Nm at 1,900 rpm where the Daihatsu/Toyota etc. 3-cilnder has 93 Nm at 3,600 rpm. The TwinAir has 1,2 liter 4 cilinder power. Fiat will even offer it in the Punto shortly. The TwinAir does not come cheap, you''ll have to pay a € 1,300 premium over a 4-cilinder 1,0 liter Fiat 500. If it can pus a car to 150 mph I don't know, but for the 3-cilinder 1 liter that will be very ambitious too.

Tyler Linner (6 minutes ago | edit | delete)

I figure if the Tatra 77A could go 93mph with 75hp, this thing, with smaller frontal area and hopefully better aero should do at least 120... if it's offered with a 4 cylinder turbo I imagine it could easily hit 150.

Anyway, the premium may be a little high. It really depends, and if I were to make the car in real life I'd be more concerned when picking a powerplant. Does the Twin Air come with a manual transmission? That would seal the deal.

update...

Martin van Duijn (2 minutes ago)

Yep, it's a manual, with a start/stop system. I'd love to have one, and in this color.

Tyler Linner (1 second ago)

Uffda. Clutch. I'm pretty much sold on that.

Two things that I would change a bit; that both related to the side profile that you sketched: the grill to hood transition needs to get a radius. (It looks like you dropped the stagnant point which is a good thing, I think; so it won't look like the sketch, but it would negate the sharp-ish corners on the top outsides of the grill.)

The windshield needs a bit of a "vertical" curve to blend it with the roof. This would bring it closer to the sketch, I think. You have a lot of "horizontal" curve in it now, which is fine, though this shrinks the interior volume, and could allow for the front fenders to sweep in at the front a bit more?

If you leave the wheel track where it is, then you will have to integrate strakes and/or fairing and/or skirts into the model. I would narrow the rear track more than you have already; to let the fender curve you already have cover the rear wheels. And maybe the curve of the sides that are shown in the top/plan view be a little larger radius and to start the taper a little closer to the front.
