Bicycle Bob mentioned buying insurance by the day in another post, but didn't elaborate on it. Is this something that you have available to you? It may be a worthwhile venture for you.

Ha Ha, I mentioned not insuring parked cars and got a bunch of nancies all wound up. It should be on the forum somewhere.

Anyway, as long as at least one vehicle is always "on" the policy, it stays in force. My insurance co has always allowed me to call in with switching various vehicles "on" and "off" coverage. Sometimes I will have multiple vehicles covered simultaneously but mostly I strive to only have one on at a time.

I only ever have "active" vehicles on my policy. If they're parked for any length of time (except my "daily", which I don't drive on a daily basis), they're off, but i keep my plate. As long as I keep insurance at all, PA is none the wiser, and doesn't ask for the plates back, so I can have 12 registered vehicles and only pay insurance for one, although legally, the other 11 aren't registered unless they're insured.

My ins company is OK with me switching vehicles alot, as long as it's not a daily thing.

You're lucky. I think there's a fine per day for having plates without insurance in NY. You have to surrender your plates before canceling/transferring insurance. If anybody knows a legal (or almost legal) way around this, I'd love to know....

I tried to find a way around it a couple years ago, there really isn't one that I'd ever been able to find, or that I didn't feel had worse potential consequences than it was worth.

You can't keep 'em under tarps, either. They'll lift the tarp to check for a plate.

You might be able to get away with no insurance if you have classic or antique reg's, though.

I believe the insurance company is required to inform the DMV when you cancel your insurance in NY. Nobody will bother checking for plates on my cars. Some have plates anyway, I often "lose" a plate right before surrendering them. Good for keeping the zoning law enforcers quiet.

"Vintage" plates might work. That's when you use old plates from the car's model year. But I don't think my Metros are old enough to qualify yet.

i think the mirror delete is at least a medium in terms of effectiveness. i don't believe it has a "small" effect.

Hi Everybody. I just recently purchased a 2010 Jeep Patriot (needed the cargo space). According to fueleconomy.gov the Patriot (aside from expensive hybrids) gets the most MPG's in it's class. I've been trying the hypermiling tips, but now I'm ready to modify. Will the air deflectors improve my mileage?
