Believe it or not, I wanted a Kombi when I was in high school.

I wanted a Dodge Viper since the GTS was introduced when I was in 7th grade. When I had the opportunity to buy one ~12 years ago, I was still stupid enough to go for it. I'm glad I had the experience, but now my automotive desires are very different, where I want something like a VW XL1 more than anything else.

I must confess I still like some sportscars, but even when I was a kid I have always been more excited about cars that could serve to general purposes.

Well, I still consider something like this cool enough, even though I'd prefer a different bodystyle...

Love the Cd 0.90! Glad you'd be paying for the alcohol and not me.

To be fair, he did say 'even though I'd prefer a different bodystyle...'

Best example I can find easily would be a woodie monoposto:

Nowadays if I would get a clearly-unaerodynamic vehicle, most likely I'd look for a Jeep CJ or a Toyota J40, as they actually have a size that may render them more practical even for city commuting than the best-selling econoboxes in Brazil, plus they would remain suitable to go basically anywhere (including to go visit some cousins in the countryside).

As for a hot-rod, when I said I would prefer a different bodystyle, it would probably be something with a fully-enclosed body focusing on the overall utility, plus an enclosed engine compartment which I would be more comfortable assuming it could decrease the likelihood of having it vandalized. Even though relying on a hot-rod as the only vehicle won't be the case, I'd still prefer to not compromise too much its ability to remain suitable for some occasional commuting when a more conventional vehicle wouldn't be readily available.

I didn't really pay too much attention to aerodynamics anyway...

Not sure if that one is alcohol-powered or gasser, but most likely it's a gasser.

The shell game is getting clearer from the 2019 SEC filing. Two important items:

"a spokesman confirmed that the W-15 was “no longer an active project for Workhorse”. “We had a change in management about a year ago, and the decision was made to continue our core business with vans and last-mile delivery systems,”

Workhorse "sold" their intellectual property related to the electric truck to Lordstown Motors for $12.2 million.

In Summary:
Workhorse CEO created Lordstown Motors as a vehicle to move bad debt from the failed electric truck project off their books. They are now free to concentrate on making the C-Series delivery van for UPS.

I don't think that made the point you intended. The reason why everything you can think of was invented in the US is because the structure encourages exploration of new ideas. Most ideas are a terrible failure, and decoupling a failed idea with a failed life encourages innovation.
