What's wrong with more aero AND more hypermiling? I'm going to try to stay above 50 for the winter, but next summer should( hopefully) see a VW in the top 10.

Looks like 90 day attrition is happening to a few teams and Team 'Yoda has fallen behind VW again. We need to get some of the high mileage diesels back.

Absolutley nothing wrong with aero and hypermileing. It's just that with better aero I can return to driving on major highways and not take the additional FE hit for higher speeds. Most of the hypermiling will remain because they are now learned habits that won't go away. I haven't used my cruise control in months and better aero would allow the return of cruise control to the fold.

Know what you mean about "learned habits." I find myself looking for the engine kill switch when using our service truck at work( not a good idea in a 20,000gvw truck).

Our sevice truck is a gas job with an automatic, that is very close to its' GVW wt limit. Some of the things that can be done is coast in neutral, and turn engine off at railway crossings when lights are flashing, and when behind three or more cars at a intersection red light...

My best 104 mpg fill-up in the Firefly was at ~20 mph average, per the SG (which is not a "rolling average" speed - it includes time stopped, up to 5 minutes).

I've got 35, 45 and 50 mph speed limits, which are ideal for good mileage. I do a 25-40 P&G cycle most of the time, adjusting a little higher or lower at certain points. (like 5 mph past the neighbors as I approach home. )

I recently had reason to drive my route at higher speeds. I had to meet a contractor at the house. Driving style this time:
- my usual moderate acceleration, about the same as general traffic
- top speed at the posted limit, p&g down to 5 mph below where the road is clear
- minimum braking, carry no extra speed into stops. This means some long glides, one is a mile long before the stop.

My Scangauge-reported average speed? 30 mph, about 5 mph higher than my normal. I also lost about 10 mpg. I'll gladly trade 2 minutes for that.

This is a good explanation of much of my driving too. I go faster than you but I have largely emulated your driving tactics and strategies and I own nearly the same car, though I have modified mine quite a lot, as you know. My UG won't give me ave mph because the EOC routine messes up the data (I get numbers like 87 ave mph sometimes). Much of the difference between our 90 day averages (88 mpg and 61 mpg) might be explained by speeds? My goals are to hit, exceed, or stay within 5 mph of the posted speed limits, which are generally 50 on the main roads, 25/35/45 on the neighborhood streets, and of course 65 on the freeway. I like to imagine that what I am doing can be scaled-up to the MT parts of the US auto fleet without radical changes to roads or speed limits.

Well, it was suboptimal because I only let the glides go down 5 mph. A 15 mph spread is better if the conditions allow. I have specifically chosen my route to allow such speed variations.

I'm sure you know that 65 is too fast for good numbers. Your aero mods help, but the gearing is still working against you. You're running 2600 rpm at that speed. I aim to keep it below 2100 at the peak of my pulses, and even lower most of the time.

Do you have a kill switch, or are you using the key?

Keying off the ignition screws up the ScanGauge readings in my Firefly - but adding a kill switch fixed the problem.

I installed an injector kill switch with a friend. It cuts-off the ground. When I time it right, the UG does not even go black temporarily. But it has always been the case that in the "run" position, with the injectors off, the speed average starts climbing steadily, almost as if it is calculating distance traveled in some unknown metric.
