I have a substantial amount of real estate that needs mowed. With gas prices what they are, I decided to apply Fuel Economy to the John Deere.

Haven't watched the vid yet, but why aren't 3rd party any good?
I feel like the same problem exists with catalytic converters given my 1 experience with trying to replace one.
Some things you just have to pay more to pay once. |

Not sure of a technical reason, but we used parts store sensors and fought with fuel economy gains. After way too many hours of frustration, we tried OEM O2 sensors as a last resort and -- what do you know? We got the gains!
Cheaper sensors will get rid of a DTC, and the ECU doesn't complain, when everything's stock. But even then, they don't seem to get quite as good fuel economy as the OEM sensors.
Best I can tell is it probably has something to do with calibration.

I agree I think you have to watch out with aftermarket O2's sensors. I have a fake BOSCH WB that reads 14.7 all the time.
Also I'll add on my setup I run in open loop all the time for fuel economy. If I run it in closed loop I can't run my car very lean and get miss-firing. I think it has to do with the oscillation of closed loop.

A Honda Insight will throw a CEL for just about any but the factory wideband, and that sensor actually changed for almost every year of the car. I'm not surprised to hear other vehicles are picky as well.

Why were you so hell bent on modding the ignition system when the analyzer sat you down, held both your hands, looked you deeply in the eyes and told you in plain English that the carburetor was the problem?

Oh, so it's not enough the mower already gave me a tongue lashing, but you're going to rub it in and reinforce that "parental guidance?"  The reason is that it was easier for me to clean up ignition inadequacies than to mess with the non-adjustable carburetor. Eventually I had to find a way, though.

The plugs are coming out of the Superbeetle, so I'm considering getting a new set and making this modification. My plan is to straighten the side electrode and use a drill press to make a cone shaped depression in the center electrode and bend the side electrode down on a sacrificial shim to drill the side electrode.
Any tips?
