Random Aerodynamic Oddity of the Day Thread

Random Aerodynamic Oddity of the Day Thread

A thread to place some of the weird things you come across.

I'm thinking such a helmet could be useful in a trike design or someplace where a really small canopy is too expensive or heavy to implement.

It was just too darn silly not to share.

Easier to pressurize a suit than an entire cockpit I guess.

Remove the wings and you might get a road vehicle out of it.

People will be sure to get out of your way.

Silent Helicopter Blades

https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blue-edge

Quote:
Cutting down on the 'blade-vortex interaction' that causes the loudness of helicopters today, Blue Edge works with another technology called Blue Pulse to combat that phenomenon.

According to Gizmodo, by adding 3 flaps to the edge of the Blue Edge blade, they "move up and down at 15 to 40 times per second, using piezoelectric motors that also help to reduce the blade-vortex interaction."

A wind tunnel and laser guidance helped the Olympic luge team learn about uniform tech
https://www.popsci.com/luge-wind-tun...MPID=ene021518

Quote:
The key piece of equipment at the San Diego Wind Tunnel is a 20-foot fan, powered by a 2,250 horsepower motor, that accelerates air up to 270 miles per hour. .....................

“We taught them some things about the fabrics that they were using,” he adds. To keep the person wearing the different suits in the same position and minimize variables, they used a laser guidance system, projecting the laser’s light onto a specific spot on the helmet.

Can we include hydrodynamics? One of my current fascinations (as of 20180212) is the M-hulled M-80 pentamaran: Solution... Permalink #17

(I guess it is compressing air in it's passive ram-jets) ...and it's surface-piercing (anti-cavitation?) propellers:

Would it be better to spin the water opposite the prop kind of like running a stator Upstream of a fan to coach the incoming flow to be moving at a right angle to the direction it will be coming out of the fan improving it's forward bite on the air

Frank Lee never forgets.

gumby79 — A Gurney flap or something? It would probably add more drag than thrust. I suspect the problem with anti-cavitating props is air bubbles eating the metal. Those flutes may be for vortex generation or something.

I found something odd, and if all "fluid dynamics" are fair game then explain the advantage of the gap/slot before the movable portion of the rudder.

MORE random pics...... - Page 4443 - Pelican Parts Technical BBS

I have an idea or two but want to see if it matches anyone else's ideas.
