And I agree with 99metro: now that the car is in good mechanical condition, your next step should be fuel economy instrumentation, so you get the feedback you need to start adjusting the nut behind the wheel.

Driving technique is HUGE as is where you drive. I deliver pizza with my 1991 metro 3 cyl/5 speed. The car is stock except for 42 psi tire pressure and 0W-30 Mobil 1. The engine is a bit tired with only 165 psi of compression and a miss at idle. However, I have seen a 3 tank average on E10 of 43 MPG-all city. Why? I do a ton of driving without braking and engine off coasting ( I estimate that I drive 20 miles per tank with the engine off). If I don't do it I get about 39 MPG. Then again I am driving in coastal Florida where highs are in the 60's-80's in winter so my results may not be realistic in other parts of the country.

Sadly, the cost of business insurance ($2500 a year vs $1250 a year) on a no airbag Metro wipes out all of my savings versus my 22 mpg Frontier and it winds up being a wash. I also had my pay cut $300 a month as of January and people who don't tip piss me off.
The Metro was a gamble more on my analysis of the commodities and futures markets combined with the national debt almost equaling the GDP. I feel gas prices are about to surge heavily as we are entering a perfect storm of economic turmoil. I am even predicting another oil embargo like in the 70's by 2012. If that happens, I expect to see gasoline rationing like in the 70's (8 gallons 2x a week) and will likely be the only driver able to work in my store. Right now, I use 8-10 gallons a week which means I can ride out rationing with fuel to spare. It also means the second Metro will gain a lot of value and could sell for thousands to some idiot in an SUV with a long commute. You bet I will gouge them for all it's worth if it does! Plus, I expect to have my Mega Metro done by that time and it should see 50 mpg city and in excess of 65mpg highway when it is done.

Sorry but I don't know the VINs for them. However, a true XFI came in either white or aqua metallic, only with a manual transmission, without factory A/C (some had it added at the dealer), no hubcaps, no passenger mirror, unpainted top half of the bumpers, 2 ring pistons, milder econo cam, 3.79 final drive ratio vs 4.09, XFI badging on the doors and hatch ( it may be missing as it's just a sticker) and it was made from 1990-94. Now not all of those things are easy to verify (it's a 20 year old bottom feeder of a car and people do alter them) but if you have a lot of those features it likely is an XFI.

I'm thinking I'm not as smart as everyone on here. I signed up because of your "retired" car and DIY only available to those who sign up. Well, DIY tells me how to get rid of a side mirror.
I was hoping for a DIY on seat belt conversion from door to pillar. Any help?

And I'ved owned two XFIs. I don't know why but city mpg suffers when compared to one with the air conditioning camshaft. The XFI may be good for the commuter, but not so much for the pizza delivery guy.
It wouldn't be the car to seek as a 50 mpg crx would be. Guess I'm bringing practical application to this sight. My car is my livlihood.
