It sounds like the Residence is a boat anchor I know, we all have our reasons.

Dirt floor? Rototill a few gallons of ox blood into it and then use concrete-finishing tamper/propellor/vibrator to finish it. Not that I've ever done it, that's from antiquity.

How level will the trailer bed be? You lay down swing-door material and shim it to get maybe ±64th or 100th of an inch. It would be good to have a plate more accurate than you want the chassis.

Great thread, interesting project. I'm reading several references to VW chassis and such, I thought I'd offer up that I am a bit of a 'subject matter expert' when it comes to the old air-cooled chassis, and modifications. I've build several VW based torsion bar suspension racing cars, have consulted on several others, and have a good handle on what works, and what parts are available. I also know many sensible fabrication techniques that myself and several of my VW racing friends use that reduce the need for having to 'reinvent the wheel', keep costs down, while keeping it safe. Just throwing it out there...

Just for my own information what is the weight of a stock Tyoe 1 beam axle and the comparable aftermarket aluminum axle? Wheel to wheel, spindle to spindle or whatever as long as they are the same configuration. No estimates please.

The Jamar aluminum torsion "tubes" with adjusters and shock towers is advertised at 35 lbs, bare. Will have to get back on the stock steel one.

stankoprowski -- If you go here and load a shopping cart you might get a shipping weight. I avoid shopping carts.

The total weight wil vary due to choices of: link-pin vs ball-joint, steering dampner or no, steering gearbox or no (it mounts to the beam), stock width vs narrowed vs widened and gusseted for offroad. I 'estimate' the figure could vary over ±50lb.

Cars have parts, Thee Template doesn't.

I like the Corvette frame. The Edison2 VLC uses a combination of cast and stamped aluminum. I don't know about fiberglass but what you are asking for is available in carbon fiber:
