I would just like to remind people to keep it civil. Please self moderate yourself before you are moderated.

I have been convicted of drunk driving some years ago. I'm not a heavy drinker, it was a one time error thing. I thought I was ok to drive, but I was not. Lots of deaths probably are one time errors too. Some people die from those errors, and some people have their good lives ruined from those errors too.

Thankfuly in my case noting bad happened before I was stopped. I would have been glad my car could have let me know I should not drive it. And even if I wanted to drive it, I would have been glad it did not let me.

What is there to be moderated ? IMO it's been pretty civil.

A classic case of diverting responsibility.
You should have made the decision not to drink or not to drive - not your car.

The DUI-cases have already found ways to bypass these devices.
They'll only be a nuissance to people who don't D&D.

And to those who are stuck somewhere because the tester failed and the car won't start. Kinda like the Passlock in my Saturn, which leaves me stranded any time the temperature drops below 55 degrees.

Yeah, I kinda like my civil rights just the way there are (or, more to the point, where they were in 2000.) If they are that worried about me, they can subsidize the handheld testers to the point where I can afford to keep one in the glove compartment of all my cars, and then _I_ will decide whether to use one.

I've noticed from watching/reading the news that a fair percentage of drivers that DUI also have their license revoked (or never had it at all). Many hit and runs are caused by drivers without a license. What if we replace the car's ignition with a device that reads the driver's license? If it is not inserted, or has expired, then the car won't start. If you've misplaced or forgotten your license, then you shouldn't be on the road! You are a hazard to the health and/or lives of others!

@MASH: What about hammers with wooden handles? Those can sometimes break causing serious injuries...

...hurry, get Congress to mandate Hammer Control legislation with the motto: "...Get your HAMMER fixed or else...!"
