Great story. There's something similar in bike racing, with a teamwork twist.

A teammate of mine once "broke away" from a large group of riders, who tried to organize themselves into a paceline to run him down. In a paceline, everyone rides single file; the intent is to ride in the slipstream of the rider in front of you in order to reduce your workload. One rider leads for a short time, then peels off to let the next rider lead, and on it goes. I was in the paceline. When I got to the front I would ease up ever-so slightly, not enough to cause a pileup behind me but certainly enough to cause the paceline to have to spread out a bit and become disorganized. This went on for several rotations of riders until one of them finally got the message; I was not about to help them catch my teammate!

That's it- I don't have to go as fast as possible, just faster than you (or make sure that someone on my team does)!

I bought a roof box for my Insight, will pick it up tomorrow. It is a 77 km drive one way.
My wife asked how I was going to get the box home. Would it fit if I fold the back seats down?
I said Why, it is supposed to go on the roof...
She: But that would ruin your FE!

I'll put it on the roof anyway, need to know how to and such before we need it. I'm eco minded but no saint.
And of course I like to know how much it hurts...

I see roof boxes as an ecomodder sort of thing. Adding utility to a vehicle that one already has rather than go for a bigger vehicle. A hitch mounted rack would be more aero (at the expense of trunk access)

..... if the only time you utter an expletive is when a light unexpectedly turns red and you have to do a hard brake.

.... when you know your commute on a congested freeway would go faster and 1000s of gallons would be saved if even a quarter of the people practice hypermiling techniques.

Carrying an empty roof box? Well, OK, but take it off as soon as you get home!

We had a look at it, but apparently the roof bars have to be taken off to make it fit inside.
It was getting late so I just left it on and drove slow. May have taken just half a liter extra for the 77 km. (4.6 l/ 100 km into a mild headwind & no drafting)
