Drag Racing?

Drag racing, NASCAR and Indy car racing are resposible for many of the safety, aerodynamic and performance improvements used on all of our cars now.

Learning to get the most performance out of an engine is how they have been able to use smaller engines and get good performance and better mileage.

I am using much of what I learned from building my drag car to help get the most out of my daily driver now for mileage. Getting your engine and drive train the most effecient will help performance and mileage.

Modern engineering is remarkable! I am still amazed at my SRT4 running now in the 12.7s while spinning through 1st gear quite a bit at 11 mph and it still gets 32.8 mpg on the highway at 60-65....I am too impatient to drive a long distanvce at 50-55! Even while drag racing it gets better use of fuel than my 84 Horizon. It takes 6 passes in the SRT4 to use 5 lbs of gas and only 3 to use that much in my 17 second Horizon. The SRT4 is 2825 lbs while the Horizon is only 1810 lbs. I use an EGT gauge to make sure I am not to rich while going down the track and both cars run their quickest at 1490 degrees.
You can hop into a new Chrysler that is way over 4000 lbs with a 300+ hp Hemi and get better economy than a crap load of 4 bangers built in the 80's!
I just drove a pals 300 and you would never be able to tell that half the motor was shut off......I tried every thing top fell when the electronics would pick up or cut out those 4 cylinders.

Looks great! Do you race for points? Did you ever get to race at the ET Finals for your division? I won the 87 NHRA Div 3 ET Finals in that same old 84 Plymouth Horizon that I was driving back and forth to the track! Back then it had the 5 speed and ran high 15s nearly stock since it was one of 84 built with the HO Shelby carb motor. I was breaking 2 trannies a year so switched to automatics and a lot less powerful motors for $$$ savings.

My home track was the Texas Motorplex.

I raced the points for the Texas Motorplex for many years. Top ten finisher, won a bunch of races and lost atleast once every way possible. Our season was usually 23 weeks long and I raced Texas Raceway and Denton on my weeks off to keep at the top of my game. It was a lot of fun and I won enough to pay all of my expenses but about 3 years ago I had to quit because of my business.
I raced No electronics and was usually on of the faster guys in my class.
