Yeah bring on your ecoboost. Many here dig turbos, myself included.

Ok, I have made my Fuelly profile - but I do like the information & sharing here to help everyone get more for their money in fuel so I will try again. and for the 'Negs' (those who just want to attack - I will instantly /ignore their profile.

I know it's a truck AND I have the heavy tow rear differential - I am pretty happy so far about how I can get the truck to do a lot better on gas. Anyone with the 3.55 or 3.31 rear differential should be able to make this truck do MUCH better than me.

So here is my original 'success' post :

ok so here's my latest tank. In & around town, avoiding traffic, timing lights (where I could), keeping the RPM under 1500 90% of the time & running on 87 octane - 10% ethanol at 3500 feet altitude. Empty truck, 3.73 rear differential, 4x4 & supercrew cab (so its a lot heavier than normal).

804.5 km : 104.3 liters = 12.97 L/100 km (18.3 mpg - *CITY* !!-hand calculated). Not too bad when it should be 16-17 mpg in the city - so that puts me about 11-12% OVER EPA !

**note my trucks '12.9 L/100 km' is accurate to my hand calculated off the pump - so for the past 4 tanks, the truck computer has been near dead on with hand calculation.

Mostly due to less stop & go, timing lights, keeping my speed down (and thus wind drag).

My newest tank that I just filled I put 91 octane in (instead of 87) as I have read that the turbos deliver better power on the higher octane - so I am hoping that the truck will do better in the low RPM range where I keep it 95% of the time (below 1500 rpm). I will update as it goes !

And for those who were supportive - thank you. I can only own one vehicle and I use my truck for motorcycles, quads, hunting & offroad enough to justify the need.

(I wish I could down a little run-about car as well)

sorry ecobooster, my last post was really just about noting the similarities in threads. not meant to be a brow beating about trucks. i've even got a bit of a beating on here before for working on ideas to help a yukon get better mileage cruising at 80mph

You've got a bit of an uphill climb to wrangle bigger numbers out of your Ecobooster, but I'm seriously envious. I've been salivating just thinking about these engines ever since I first read about them, when Ford was still calling them TwinBoost engines at the auto shows.

An F-150 is a big ol' barn door flying down the road. There are lots of things you can do to help its aero profile. Go read up on Big Dave and Diesel Dave, and then climb the mountain to consult the aero guru that is Aerohead. Unless I'm mistaken, Aerohead is a genuine aeronautics engineer, so he knows his stuff.

Thanks Elhigh, I've accepted its a big heavy chunk of steel & glass & I'm REALLY wishing there was some way to turn it into a 50mpg car - but I know there isn't - yet....(so many of the new cars out there have great MPG without even hypermiling!)

I will definately have a look for BigDave, Diesel Dave & Aerohead's tricks & methods to get the best mpg I can out of this truck (in a still useable form). he thing is still brand new & I cannot make any changes that might void my warranty, there has still got to be things I can do to make it 'better'.

I would love to get one of those truck caps that one member makes - but seems a LONG way to travel to pick one up as I am North of Montana.

But it's a good start so far.

Big dave built an air dam that drug on the ground and seemed to get good results.
I took his big dam idea and built a much less extreme version only going down 9''.

Big dave and aerohead both use fast backs.
I think big dave claimed his fast back netted him +3mpg.
You can build your own fast back, there are only about a dozen build threads for them.

A bigger air dam and fast back wont void your warranty.

2011 F 150 Ecoboost Road Test

Did some road testing with my friend Melaney's Ecoboost. I built her a black Aerolid about a year ago. We tested the fold away boat tail with the Aerolid on her truck in latter April of this year.

The road test was a 200 mile round trip on I-30 from Little Rock to Hope Arkansas and back @ 70 mph. Conditions were ideal with winds light and variable and air temperature between 78 and 82 degrees.

The fuel efficiency result was 28.73 mpg hwy (US) for the road test. This beats the upcoming mandated CAFE 28.6 mpg hwy figure for light trucks by 2015 year model.

This is but one road test with Melaney's truck with the lid/boat tail combo. In multiple road tests using my 2009 F 150 4.2 liter which is rated at 20 mpg hwy, a consistent 25.5 to 26 mpg hwy was realized @ 70 mph driving the same route we used to road test the black Ecoboost with the combo.

Ok - this is JUST a short 35 minute highway run today where I found a nice tractor trailer I drafted (at a safe distance - but JUST inside the messy air where it smooths out), then 10 minutes in traffic till I stopped and took the picture - needless to say, Drafting can work WONDERS.

Bondo, Big Dave and the guys are correct - MPG on a truck are pretty much Aero.

35 minutes highway, 95 km/h (60 mph), drafting a tractor trailer.

***On a side note I do have a scangauge II running but by my hand calculations from the past 5 tanks - my onboard OEM fuel computer has been near bang on (ex.: last calc was 18.32 mpg average and the computer read 18.3) - so for running about, I do trust the onboard for now until I figure my scangauge out properly.
