2015 Murano LED retrofit into 2013 Prius

As I've mentioned in the various LED headlight threads that have popped up over the last several months here, I've been using drop-in H11 LED bulbs off ebay for ~18 months now as an experiment. According to the seller, the bulbs I got use two LEDs that together consume 18W per bulb, and put out 2000 lumens. They've been mostly okay for around-town driving, but (as I've read is common with these LED replacements) they don't have the distance of the stock halogens, and they put out a lot more light above the cutout than the halogens did (for a demonstration, see this thread. Mine don't look quite that bad, but they are noticeably less bright on the highway than halogens).

So, in exploring options for getting some better lighting, I came across a great deal on new 2015 Nissan Murano LED low-beam projectors and LED high-beam reflectors, and decided to try a retrofit which I will document in this thread. Only a few people have done this, but there is some information out there--this thread I found particularly useful. The Murano assemblies have a single 11W LED for each beam that puts out a nice white light with good distance, which is exactly what I'm looking for. So, after cutting headlight power consumption to one third, from 110W to 36W, this will cut it almost in half again, from 36W to 22W, get rid of the fan noise, and have better output and pattern to boot.

The OEM lenses are clear, but have faceting that produces a wider, more colorful cutoff and other prismatic effects:



I'm replacing those with TSX-R clear lenses. Sharper cutoff, no lines!

Now, I'm toying with the idea of picking up another set of low-beam LED projectors, either Murano or Corolla, since they're so cheap right now and doing a quad-projector retrofit, with a light bar in the front grill for my highbeams. Hmm....

Just be sure to set them on stun the first time you take them out for a test drive.

I did some research and it looks like chances are that this isn't strictly legal. With that said, I consider it unlikely that it would be a problem. Once I have the money to afford a citation for improper headlamps, I'd likely do the conversion since my headlamp lenses are cataract yellow due to UV.

I may just polish my headlight lenses though. If I was to do all around LED retro, I'd have to disable my idle up valve to see most of the FE gains (on my car, the idle up valve is ran off of the tail lights).

These are in a legal "gray area," as far as I can tell. If you read the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards code, section 108, there are all sorts of testing requirements and certifications for headlamps. These projectors, having been pulled straight out of a production vehicle in the US market, meet those criteria, and the code doesn't say anything about swapping approved headlight components between housings. Running more than 4 light sources in the headlamps is illegal as well, but I'll only have 4 projectors in there total, so I can get by there on a technicality.

Just ordered another set of LED low beams, the trapezoidal Corolla projectors. I think they'll fit nicely in the high beam reflector area. They're the same Koito assembly and 11W chip as the Murano projectors; this will give me 22W per headlight with both on, slightly more than I'm running now but much less than the stock 55W, and should have output comparable to 55W HID bulbs.
