Yeah. I looked at one on the lot once. I would be tempted by the 2011s, but the turbo means EOC would be more troublesome and so the manual transmission becomes less attractive. What is attractive is the diesel, if it were manual, even if it had a turbo... the added fuel economy of the diesel is tempting. That too is available in the older versions. But this new cruze is lighter and I bet slightly better (or as good) in the aero department.

Just add a small parallel electric oil pump and you can EOC your heart away.

But I thought it was a cooling issue? Or is the oil used for cooling?

Yes. The issue is with oil coking (overheating) inside the turbo when there is no fresh oil supply. That is why you would add a small pump just to keep oil flowing when the engine is off.

That's pretty damned interesting. So I did a little more googling and some searching here at EM and found two interesting links:
Here is an academic discussion of the benefits and methods: Oil Coking Prevention Using Electric Water Pump for Turbo-Charge Spark-Ignition Engines
And this from our own jedi_sol who says his STi has a water cooled turbo and no fear of coking: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post454019
It seems the Cruze's turbo is already water-cooled at least in part. Lots of modding possibilities for EOC, then. That's kinda cool to know.

GM was developing a twin-turbo 1.6L meant as a replacement for the single-turbo 2.0L currently used in the Cruze.

I'm quite sure all turbochargers are water cooled these days. Only very old designs don't use water cooling. I'm thinking designs back in the 80s.

When I worked rental cars, the Cruze was a top contender on my car wash loop with the 1.4 turbo, according to its factory FCD anyway. The main problem is the engine's torque is so fun, it's hard not to drive it like a jerk.

I don't think you're driving like a jerk if you enjoy all of the torque in a turbo diesel since you can still get decent mileage ( I got over 40). The fun ends abruptly as the rpms rise so you've had your fun before you break the posted speed limit and torque vectoring (VW ESP) limits wheel spin--if you're practiced at it That! I miss about my old car.

There are still some exceptions, including some eco-oriented turbochargers available here in Brazil.
