Neil,

Just wait, and I'll bet that a forum dedicated to the Bolt will come up with a way to disable the regen while coasting. MIMA in my Insight does the same thing. I can control if/when either assist or regen.

Jim.

At least Honda has made (relatively) aerodynamic wheels for cars with regenerative braking for what? Sixteen years now?

The "one pedal" driving mode actually came from requests on the Volt forum.

Not sure. Mirage is as subby and shorter, yet managed 0.27.

Right, I heard that, as well. Tesla and BMW are also proponents of lots of regen on the accelerator pedal. But those of us who know how to ecodrive know that coasting is better.

I love how our e-Golf drives, and that is how I hope more EV's go in the future.

Most drivers would not use the free wheel coasting well. They'd just maintain speed, then brake hard like they are used to.
The one pedal mode would entice them to not use the brake pedal as much and force them to plan ahead to allow deceleration without the brakes.
It is a good thing in general, even if we could use free wheel coasting better.

Arcimoto use a hand lever for regen and foot pedal for the hydraulics. That would feel natural for a motorcycle rider.

How does the e-Golf coast?
.
Keep in mind Chevy uses permanent magnet motors which have eddy losses (cogging) when "coasting". So you would need a neutral position in a transmission to really coast.

One pedal operation of a perm magnet ev still "coasts" when you are neither adding power nor taking it away from the wheels. The back emf from the spinning motor exactly matches the forward voltage from the controller so there is no current flowing even though your foot is still part way down on the accelerator pedal.
.
Having max accel and max regen all on one pedal simply means that you don't have to lift your leg to the other pedal to slow down or even hold a hill apparently since the new system will actually apply and release the friction brakes by itself at a stand still so you still don't have to move your foot to creep along in traffic jams.

BOLT image

I teased the BOLT from out of it's background with Edward Scissorhands and pasted it up with an AST comparison. The original photo is not in true length so we can't be sure about it's actual contour, but it looks pretty okay.
