There's a demon inside this engine that rips apart viscosity modifier molecules.
I'm still changing the winter oil around 3,000 to 4,000 and I'll add 1/2qt 20w-50 after about 1,000 miles.

Anything getting hot enough to refine? Got oil temp monitoring?

Problem is the oil doesn't get hot enough and during the winter it loads up with fuel and it has a coolant to oil heat exchanger. The first oil test I did had 5% fuel.
I changed the oil this last time after the cars engine was still hot from driving a 700 to 800 mile road trip.

Believe it's a 2L Nu gdi.
I don't know what else uses that engine.

I’m experimenting with oil now since the Ioniq has Gdi also and is a hybrid. I’ve been doing 8-12k miles between changes with 0w-20 so now I’m worried about wear at 225k miles

As long as you can maintain an oil film in the bearing you don't have issues. In the past that maintenance was an issue where the bearing gaps were a couple thousanths.
Worse yet those gaps would grow and shrink during operation. Modern engineering and metallurgical advances changed that

GDI engines, especially in hybrids load up the oil with gas. Plus even with fuel contamination is within acceptable levels something in side the 2L nu engine shears down the oil causing the 5w-20 to lose viscosity.
As a countermeasure I was filling with 5w-20 just past the low mark when I changed the oil then slowly filling up to the full mark with 20w-50. I would start adding oil at around 1,000miles and be all in by 4,000 miles. That kept the oil viscosity within spec for a "20 weight" oil.

I put 5w-30 in my car for the summer as an experiment. It feels like the engine is smoother and more stable versus the 0w-20 I’ve been using it’s whole life
