Sounds like he pulled the fuse for it. I heard to run the defroster while gettin air from the outside rather than recirc from inside and tried it with awesome results. If my AC worked I woulda just cycled it for a minute then went to inside but this works just as well! You wont miss it entirely, but like said above, sometimes there are moments where only runnin the air thru the AC system will totally remove any moisture and keep the windows clear. You could also try to silicone beads in a sock deal that someone posted up on here a while back to help in the mornings etc.

I removed the fuse for the A/C; sorry I wasn't clear.

You cannot do this on the Prius; at least the one that has the touch screen controls -- if the A/C fuse is pulled, the *entire* HVAC system is disabled. Grrrr, stupid engineering choices.

As I said before, they should program it to run the A/C only at maximum/full defrost and then only for a minute or two, and then go to heat only. And have a manual override.

Based on my fuse box, I think mine's set up the same way. There are some fuses for "HVAC" but nothing for jus the AC.

For my car there is a procedure to allow the a/c to be turned off during defrost (factory default is on with no ability to turn it off). It involves pushing certain buttons on the dash a certain number of times, this changes the setting to allow the a/c to be turned off. Might want to search and see if your vehicle has a similar procedure.

So last night I crawled under and disconnected the electrical connection on the AC compressor. Didn't throw any codes or anything, so it looks like I have my solution: switch the power lead to the AC compressor --> AC "disable" switch.

hopefully tonight

I'm going to open the hood - and check to see if the AC compressor engages when the defrost is selected - the only real way to see if the AC is really being "turned on" when in the drfrost mode - I also do have an AC switch - but that might not come into play in the dfrost mode - maybe only the Vent mode - only way to know for sure there is to get it from engineers at Ford - as to how they designed it to work. If it does engage in the drfrost mode - I too will unplug the connector to the compressor for the winter months - and make a note to plug it in and exercise the compressor once a month or so - will post findings -

Keep some microfiber towels handy, after cleaning windshield and side windows with a mild acid solution. Perfectioncleaning. If you need defrost, you'll need it fast is all I'm saying . . learned lesson hard way in a Freightliner. Had to pull over.

DD, there are .pdf downloads of the FSM online. One can trace out the wiring with some ease this way.

Update: I went ahead and just unplugged the AC compressor and ran it all winter that way. No problems whatsoever. I plugged it back in this weekend and it runs just fine.

I have been planing a switch to deactivate the AC from the heat control panel. My AC comes on defrost and mixed settings.
