After 2 tanks of gas, I finally pulled the extra piece today. Just wasn't paying off in the MPG department...it actually dropped.
MPG fer the 2 tanks with the added air dam were 18.17 mpg and 16.88 mpg. I saw 18.25 mpg, 19.03 mpg, and 18.26 mpg prior to this mod. At least it was easy to detach...

I've got a kind of air dam/sort-of tire spat design I'm trying out. It's really a full width air dam with a gap in the middle, that wraps around the bumper tire to tire. The gap is in the dead center of the the front roughly 2ft wide. I'll have to get y'all pics when I can. IMO it seems to be working btterr than the full air dam so far, but it's too early to be sure.

I was thinking it could fail to work based on the location.
You were allowing air under the car and stopping it, therefore forming a pressure build-up in that area with no obvious means of escape.
On the Corvette an opening to the radiator is provided above the set-back air dam, and the engine bay is also ventilated for flow and or pressure relief.
It looked real good while it lasted, I commend your ability to try something new.

Very nice looking piece. I'm curious to see your results after a couple tanks. I tried something along the same lines, set back from the front of my truck about 6 inches, angled towards the sides... It ended up not helping FE (hindered actually) on a drive from Wichita Falls, TX to Spfld, IL, but that may be because my truck already has A=32 sq ft. I reverted to my original mod config, a splitter that sticks out 1.5", extends back and slopes down about 2" to my front suspension frame, then straight back...
But my handiwork wasn't nearly as clean as your is. Good job!

maybe put the dam only infront of the tires/a-arms.

After my negative FE results above, I decided to revert to something more akin to the coveted 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. It has the same (or nearly the same) frontal area as the "normal" 69 Charger, but the aero shape gives it a MUCH better Cd. The Plymouth Superbird and Dodge Charger Daytona, supercars (15% better...)

Yes I think so. My MPG has trended upwards since it's introduction. It certainly didn't hurt.
