When Under High Load Towing, like what diesel trucks are used for, that's when you need the best filtration, not the best air flow. Look at the K and N website at this link, #21:

Guys, regardless of the filter brand and typer, you should NEVER reverse blow it out with compressed air. You can blow microscopic holes in the media and your filtering will be significantly diminished.

Curious if your air filtration system (not just the element, but the whole system) is doing its job? A UOA (Used Oil Analysis) might be able to tell by measuring the amount of silica and/or aluminum in a sample of used oil.

There are lots of places that provide this service (for $20-$25). Here's one I use:

There is only one draw back to using K&N filters or re-usable filters that require oil. And that is the oil. If improperly serviced that oil will get past the filter and begin to muck up your MAP sensor on the intake and those are not cheap. If it does not mess it up enough to throw a code, then it just affects the air fuel mixture which impacts your FE.

A quick update...

There is a filter available locally which rinses out in water.
The company is Australian and has been in the exhaust business for decades.

Details at the link below:
http://www.lukey.com.au/default.asp?...ONTENT&sid=268

Haven't tried one yet but it on the "to do" list.

Thanks again to all who added their comments.

Cheers , Pete.

On the TDI, you don't even take a look at the filter to see if you need to change it as they have one time compressible seals. Once you open that airbox, it's too late to turn back.

Wouldn't that be the MAF? Isn't the MAP located past the crankcase vent tube connecting to the intake? In this case the MAP is getting oiled already from the crankcase fumes going in the intake.

I use Baldwin Filters on everything I drive and also work on the heavy duty diesel trucks at work. Our business relies on quality and that is why we use Baldwin filters.

Try Rock Auto: http://www.rockauto.com/[/QUOTE]

Okay, I just spent a little time to check this place out and
Not to be redundant but that place rocks!

Parts not only for my car but for rare cars like TVR and Hillman?
Seriously I think they have a new customer.

On topic, just replace the filter because it is cheaper in the long run
and somewhere down the time line we will work out how to recycle
the damn things.

Hmmm, a new business opportunity perhaps?

Some quick numbers on the Lukey filter but note the apply only to the
local ( Australian ) market.

Standard GM pleated paper $32.00
RYCO pleated paper $22.00
Lukey washable $90.00
K&N (oil is extra) $111.00

All for the same car on the same day , tax included.

Interesting , Pete.

Just how rarely are you changing your paper filter to justify spending 90 dollars on a reusable one.

Let's see, for me I would have to use at least 10 paper filters to equal the expense of one lukey washable filter. I don't see the economic upside to this.

But then I'm just a Jerk, so what do I know.

Attempting to reuse a paper filter borders on the insane. They are dirt cheap and are responsible for protecting something very expensive. When their service life is over, put them in the trash and buy another. You won't be saving any trees when your engine block has to be melted down because you spun a bearing.

That being said, I am a fan of Purolator's blue oiled paper filters.
