I gotta admit, that is about twice as many as I figured would be sold.

Looks like the Spark gets about 38MPG average on Fuelly. Might get up a bit when the engines break in a bit more.
I like how you can play music, videos on the navigation screen from a USB stick (as long as transmission is not engaged).
It'll be interesting how the 2014 Fiesta with the 1L Ecoboost with ~125HP competes.
I still say buying a used 2010 Prius is the better way to go. Bigger, more HP, more MPG and only a few thousand more dollars. It's kind of like the Spark is a car for people who don't want to buy a used hybrid, so instead they buy a tiny new car that gets worse mileage..

You can never compare a used vehicle to a new vehicle on price. In two years a high mileage Spark will be $8000 and a similar year and mileage Prius will still be $14000.

True, but new Spark to used Prius seems a reasonable cost comparison.
Some of us small, new(ish) car buyers like the challenge of beating the Hybrids though.

I was thinking the American customers would look at the Spark the same way I look at the Prius, or even worse.

Since it's one of the cheapest cars on the U.S. market right now, it's going to sell regardless. Even without much marketing effort.

I'm not sure on Sparks, but when I was looking at compacts back in early 2011, what I was finding was the used ones with 30k miles that were 2 or 3 years old were selling for MORE than the new ones ... that's how I ended up with a new car.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were selling for $14k in 2 years with 50k miles on them.
I'd like to see them selling for $5k in a few years. I wouldn't mind getting one as a 3rd car to commute to work / beat around the city in

Considering a predictable gas prices rise-up soon, it can also be a consistent sales argument for the Spark.

I wanted to test drive one of these at a local Chevy dealer. The dealer was good at steering me at different cars, that's for sure. I ended up walking out with a brochure for a Chevrolet cruze eco.
I would consider one of these when they get a few years old and if they have poor resale value. 2 or 3 years out I should be about due for another vehicle (meaning that I have enough cash saved up to put to use for a house and I'll spend it on a car). I can keep my Focus for trips and would bang around to work and back in this.
I'm going to try one of the other Chevy dealers in the area.
