Auto Intermittent Deer Horn - How to?

  • I drive 150 miles each night (1:00 AM to 6:00 AM) in the boonies of North Central South Dakota.
  • Most all of this is narrow two lane roads with lots of deer, raccoons, jack-rabbits and the rare, escaped, all-black/stealth cow.
  • Farm yards located with in 1/4 of the road are about 5 miles apart.

I would like to out fit my car with an intermittently beeping horn that can be operated via a toggle switch. Ideally the horn should emit short (1/8-1/4 sec.??) beeps about once each second.

I need an electric horn, a (HD) horn relay, wire, fuse & fuse holder toggle switch and ...

An suggestions for a cheap, ready made actuator circuit? Intermittent wiper are too slow. Emergency flashers are 50% on 50% off and speed is dependent on load.

Thanks for the thought, but loud pipes also wake up people in houses trying to sleep. There are five little, quiet towns where I deliver newspaper bundles. I only want to be noisy for 80-85% of the route. I could get one of those european style, alternating high note - low note sirens - but that would be overkill. (Not sure it would be legal either.)

You need a timer.... Like the one I used for turning a cheap digital camera into a time lapse camera

Quick and Easy Electronic Time Lapse

If you can solder, the kit goes together in a few minutes (at least for me) - aquick google search, and I found a place selling the same timer I used
Adjustable Interval Timer MK111 - VETCO.NET

That's how I'd do it cheaply...

If you understand all this than it will be simple to build and you wont find a cheaper way I dont think. You will need a transistor on your output to power your relay.

This kit is great! I used it to control the A/C compressor on my old car after the $1500 computer quit doing it.

Thanks. Not exactly what I want, but close enough - I'll probably order the kit.
Spec. for the kit is
  • output relay with dry switch-over contact: 3A/24V
  • pulse time adjustable: between 0.5 and 5 sec. (0.2 sec - 2 would be better.)
  • pause time adjustable: between 2.5 and 60 sec. (1.0 - 6 sec or more would be better)
  • power supply: 12V DC / 100mA
  • dimensions: 1.6" x 3.4"
