li'l progress
Michael, with SIA Electronics phoned yesterday morning.'said that under strong magnification, that he'd discovered another trace which was broken, that he didn't catch on the first go around.
No charge, and since I never heard from the office folks, presume that they're gonna ship it for free also.If so,it'll be here in a few days.

Finally, you catch a break.
So, you're not out any more money, but the time is water under the bridge.
Or do you have plenty of that lately in Texas?

*this latest adventure has absorbed over $1,000 when considering insurance premium @ zero driving for 6-months.
*since I couldn't move Spirit,I've lost quite a bit of fabrication time. And since the trip was supposed to be over in September,I've got to spend time on non-negotiable activities which now cut into fabrication.
The upshot is that I've essentially paid for a full-immersion junior college-level course in automotive electronics and have my diagnostic capabilities exponentially.
*Expecting more rain this afternoon. After EcoModder,I'll hustle home and try 'n do some bush-hogging at our community parks before the deluge. If I can.

I just verified that the ground fer the injectors is this ground point on the intake manifold and that it matches up with the E1 test point.
You should take the ground off and thoroughly inspect it fer corrosion and measure the resistance to make sure it's got a good contact.
Disabling this ground would also be a good way to disable the injectors fer anti-theft, too!

OBD-1 Toyota ECM
Here are some views of the five-dollar-wonder 1988 Camry ECM I got from the boneyard.
*unfolded,wave-soldered back side
*same view on top of a light table
*a look at same when inverted
*a look at the 'guts'
*closer look
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I counted:
17-microprocessors
13-transistors
3-solid-state relays
24-diodes
88-capacitors
164-resistors
4-unidentifiable components (Al thinks two of them may be crystal clock timers for logic)
Pretty amazing that all this can hang together for 22-years and 367,000 miles. To the Moon and halfway back!

That's a lot of entertainment value for $5.
Those DIPs are integrated circuits. Might be microporcessors, might be RAM or ASICs. You can look up the part numbers online.
Actually I did it for you; I haven't read this, but it looks pertinent.

she lives!
Just like the Toyota diagnostics 'said',it was the ECM all this time.
SIA's Michael phoned to tell me that he'd missed one trace when he had the ECM the 1st time.Under high magnification it showed up.He apologized for the inconvenience.
SIA honored their warranty,including shipping.
I plugged it in,bolted it to the kick panel and the engine fired immediately.
The Scan-Gauge/ Toyota codes were spot on.
Knowing that I've got the OBD-II and scan tool makes going into the future a lot more stress free.Plenty of spare electrical/ignition parts on hand.
I bought a pair of 'low' ramps to help when pulling the belly off,in anticipation of the trip to the muffler shop. They'll travel with me on the trip as well.
The parking brake control cable snapped, probably due to it's sodium chloride joyride at Bonneville. After I leave here today I'll look into that.
'Get through inspection and registration and she'll be mine to drive for another 11-months 'til next go-around.
Then get back to fabrication which is backed up quite a bit now.

yeah, nice to be back in action, and even with the false start,I ended up really refining my troubleshooting skills, and never had to go to Dallas and pay 3-X the amount for the same service.

It's like Bucky Fuller said — you never learn less, you always learn more.
I've been thinking about finding some big strap hinges and sinking the hinge into each ramp about halfway up and adding a plate that would be sort of a fold-out mini ramp. As it is, I have to add blocking to accommodate the approach angle.
