So much for the back burner. The cluster is almost restored already. I'm just waitin for the nos fuel gauge. I've installed an nos temp gauge and fixed the speedo using gremlin parts as they are the same. Also tested the circuit board with an ohm meter and sanded all contact points. Then painted any exposed areas of circuit. I also installed new LEDs to replace te 194s that were in the dash except for the alternator light. That requires the traditional bulb.
The pics aren't in the right order.oh well, next is installing the fuel gauge and solid state voltage regulator for the gauges
Contact points look great. Why does the alternator require the 194 bulb?

I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.
I think it has something to do with an led being polar sensitive. It messes with the charging of the alternator. I've read it can be done but you have to mess around with resistors and reversing the led.
Out with the bad in with the good. Prepping the new gauge for the external regulator. Take a gander at the original gauge...yikes!!!
Took an nos gremlin gauge and modified it. Pressed in a new post, pulled wire away from side post, soldered and sealed it to the new post. Now it's like the American gauge without the internal regulator. The external regulator will attach to the post that I pressed in.
it is a long thought process when i tackle some of these old systems to update them but its very fun. its not a 69 camaro where you can just call up a restoration parts supplier and say "hey i need this, this, and this....no ill take the cheaper reproduction made in taiwan....heres my credit card" lots of the parts specific to the car are hard to find. the engine is a piece of cake but trim is tough. i get enjoyment from every second i work on the car, unlike working at the shop.

I put the voltage regulator where the old warning flasher went. My new wiring harness has the flasher in the fuse block. I adjusted the regulator to 5v and tested it with 12v and 14v supply. Both were right on the money. I even used the new fuel sending unit to test it. Yay
Holy Toledo its been a little while. Holiday, crazy swamped at work, no time to work on it yadda yadda. I'm getting cabin fever and I wana drive this thing down the road!!!!
Came down to the shop on Saturday to put the short block together. Crank went in easy. I checked all bearing clearance and the machinist had them perfect. I went to install the cam and it wouldn't go in all the way!! Wrong cam plug in the rear. Correct one will be here tuesday. I then put all the pistons in. Bore and hone job is nice. Piston ring gaps are good. Even with the cam setback I'm rather pleased at making some progress. Hoping to have the whole short block together by this coming weekend. From oil pan to deck. I can even install the water pump.
You can see in the one pic the cam isn't all the way back that's how deep the incorrect rear plug is
