I'd take my AR every day over my 7-08 for tent or camper duty, and I'd take the 9mm Glock I practice/shoot the most with over a 5-6 shot 44 that is difficult to shoot well/expensive to pratice = no pratice, the Glock is easier to carry and shoot well, easy to carry = more likely to carry = its there when you need it. If I lived in a area where it was a concern a 10mm glock/1911 would be my choice for carry, AR for camping tent duty, but maybe 6.8 or 300 instead of 5.56.

My cargo hauling is done in relatively secure areas and doesn't involve fighting anything off. Doing things that way is just plain inefficient.

Opinions are just that. I prefer hard data, e.g. https://www.researchgate.net/publica...ence_in_Alaska and Efficacy of Bear Deterrent Spray in Alaska - SMITH - 2008 - The Journal of Wildlife Management - Wiley Online Library
(Links are to abstracts: full PDFs can be found with Google)

We found no significant difference in success rates (i.e., success being when the bear was stopped in its aggressive behavior) associated with long guns (76%) and handguns (84%). Moreover, firearm bearers suffered the same injury rates in close encounters with bears whether they used their firearms or not...

Red pepper spray stopped bears' undesirable behavior 92% of the time when used on brown bears, 90% for black bears, and 100% for polar bears. Of all persons carrying sprays, 98% were uninjured by bears in close-range encounters.

There will be a lot fewer repeat offenders if they encounter a human with a firearm.
Where I am from, Maine we are the only state where you can hunt bear with dog, trap and bait. All hunting licenses come with a "bear tag". The animal rights lunatics tried to change that law some time around 2006, so it was put on referendum. It was voted down in flames, 80% were against changing the law.
That is how I am used to dealing with them.

My friend a mile or so away has a "regular" bear. Houses on her hill are spread out and the main animals are goats and chickens. My neighborhood is a little denser and has more dogs so the bears stay away. Like the joke goes, I don't have to outrun the bear...

Yeah, we get them around here in the fall, when there's a lot of windfall fruit around. Kinda funny: when I bought this place about 20 years ago, we'd closed the sale but the previous owner was still living here, and about 6:30 one morning she phones me to say "There's a great big bear sitting on YOUR patio" :-)
