Certainly in the rain + it starts to hydroplane quickly on standing water.
Nothing is as useless as wasted stopping distance behind your car ...
In the dry, it'll be fine.

I second the notion that too low a pressure is more dangerous.

I'm a Driving Instructor so regularly have people practicing 'emergency stops' in my cars - usually at 20mph or so.
What's the point in that ?
From 60 or 70 sounds more realistic.

Not really - how many times have you had someone step out in the road in front of you when you were doing 70mph?

It happens almost daily at 20mph in town!

Besides - It's a training exercise, not a simulation of a fatal accident!

(I also don't have that much of a death wish! )

Thinks:

I once drove a borrowed 3 series BMW SE Touring flat-out on an unrestricted auto-bahn in Germany. I was doing 140mph when, in the far distance, a car doing 'only' 70-80mph overtook another vehicle, causing me to brake really heavily from 140 to 70mph.... Hairy....

My take; run whatever you are comfortable with. From personal experience of about a dozen flat tires, none have created a dangerous situation, but that doesn't mean flats are entirely safe.

as a former tire shop employee (one of the few that went to school rather than doing it for lack of finding other work) the bulge you see has little or nothing to do with inflation, it's physical damage as one of the earlier posters mentioned having to do with the belts. replace the tire ASAP and don't underinflate it to bandaid the problem, it won't last much longer at any pressure. in this case it's largely due to the age of the tire but can also be caused by road surface issues (aka running sh** over) or suspension problems (worn struts/shocks, ball joints, bushings, etc)

some congrats on getting that many miles out of the tire but that's like saying your car ticked over 200k miles. while many people manage to run their car into the ground by then, a maintained car can do it well.

I’m going to post a dissenting opinion about the cause of the failure.

First, it is really hard to diagnose tire failures from internet photos and forum descriptions. There are important clues that the average person would miss, plus there are things that are not important that are reported.

Kingsway reported bulging and deformation – a classic sign for a belt leaving belt separation. He reported the tire had 67K miles on them and were made in 2003. That’s plenty of miles and the tires are old but – as others have reported – not terribly old. It should also be mentioned that we are talking England here – mild climate.

There are cracks in the photo, but they only appear in the outermost rib. I’m sure some of that is due to the age of the tire, but because they only appear in that one area, it’s not a simple case of “too old”. It should also be noted that cracking is aggravated by bulges.

Now here is the other part: When tires are inflated, the cords in the tire are stressed (put in tension) and the greater the pressure, the greater the tension. There is also a material failure phenomenon called “Fatigue” – where the cyclic stresses will cause something to fail after many, many cycles that a single stress event won’t. In this case, 67K miles is over 60 million cycles – and that puts it in the realm of a fatigue failure. (Defect? Sorry, those would cause an early failure and never of this type.)

Conclusion: This is a classic fatigue type failure likely due to the combination of over-inflation and premature aging (source unknown) I have to agree with Kingsway – be careful with older tires (or tyres!)

Completely off topic - There's a town in NY called Tyre. I just drove through it coming back from Syracuse.

Ha ha, Tyre is the Tyre capital of the world! They should have an NYC style scrolling ticker of rubber futures and tyre company stock prices.

Would they have Tea Tyre Time at Three PM every day?

Ridiculous! I don't think I've ever had tires that were less than 6 years old. Requiring that they be replaced every 6 years regardless of any other factors is a huge waste of money and resources.

The tires on my TSX were new when I purchased the car, but they are 4 years old now and probably have another 4 years of life left on the tread. At 12,000 miles per year (average for most vehicles), I couldn't wear a set out in 6 years.
