They wrote that, but Musk didn't say or tweet it.
Here's the offending line from GCR:
Quote:
Musk has said the Cybertruck will achieve a drag coefficient of 0.30, a significant improvement on the Ram 1500, which currently leads the pickup pack with a 0.35 Cd.

The first three words hyperlink back to their article from Dec. 5, 2019, where they reported on Musk's tweet:
Quote:
With extreme effort, Cybertruck might hit a 0.30 drag coefficient, which would be insane for a truck.
|
Thus the official word is still "might" hit 0.30 "with extreme effort."

Perhaps Steven Edelstein will learn not to take liberties with other people's quotes.'Appreciate the clarification.

Permalink #447 I've a [self-]limited number of posts left. I guess I wasted that one by not being verbose. To Wit:
“Pulsed Laser Cleaning of Debris Accumulated on Glass Articles in Vehicles and Photovoltaic Assemblies.”
https://electrek.co: Tesla wants to use laser beams to automatically clean debris off cars – Yes really
caranddriver.com: Tesla Patents Frickin' Laser Beams That Clean a Car's Glass
Quote:
- Tesla has filed a patent for the process of cleaning a vehicle's glass surfaces using laser beams.
- The laser cleaning process could clean dirt and other debris blocking the view of a camera used for advanced driver-assistance features.
- Tesla also says the lasers could be used to clean the surfaces of solar panels.

Yeah, we just have to increasingly take everything the media reports with a grain of salt.

I sometimes wonder if people are being serious or just working the edge of satire. Does anyone here honestly believe pulsed lasers will be able to effectively clear a windshield of water spray on the freeway on a $35,000 vehicle in the next year and 1/2 or so?

Yeah, that would be Elon Musk.

People get patents for defensive purposes. It may be that the second or third point in the quote is the most important.
Satire is serious work, but (fact!) even a brick has fresnel.

This can slow down real progress. She was in charge of weapon patent approval the last time we talked shop but that was 2 years ago. Lasers could be in her wheelhouse but probably not windshield lasers. I did bring up Tesla at one point but she didn't spill any beans.

I don't buy it. Patents have to be specific enough, and if someone had no clue how the thing they patented would work, when someone figured it out, they would be happy to take any amount of money to "license the patent". Then there's the fact that companies ignore patents all the time. I'd simply make the thing, and when someone complained that they owned the patent, I'd ask them politely to demonstrate their idea with a working example.

Maybe I am not understanding something, but why not put on the outer surface a filter or reflective coating tuned for a set of frequencies that bracket the wavelength of the laser?

Maybe it's because I use the word fresnel without effect.

To understand the Fresnel Effect, you have to understand the basics of reflections. We'll keep this minimal - the key is the Angle of Incidence. The Angle of Incidence is the angle between your line of sight and the surface of the object you are looking at.

A laser shown parallel to the glass' surface will bounce off rather than take a right turn into the glass. If the 'lase blade lighting' is above the windshield it will be absorbed by the hood, or in this case the roadway. If it's at the bottom it will blind airliner's pilots on final approach [not].
If the glass were coated with anything, better an hydrophobic coating like Rain-X to reduce or eliminate the need to fire up the lasers.
