Having a velomobile compete would be an interesting comparison. Simply because I don't think a human over the same course and speeds could match the MPGe of these cars. (depending on what foodstuff you're using to compute calorie costs...)

I'm bummed. They just finished the local leg of the Shell Eco-Marathon and I didn't get to go.

Would it be better to compare the cost of fuel? One gallon of gas for four dollars, compared to a four-dollar ham sandwich?

I shared this thread with a friend, who is a professor at BYU-Idaho, and he responded "Speak for yourself. I'm not zero emissions - I have an inefficient digestive tract."

The driver said that it was embarrassing that she weighed more than the car and the next person said that if the driver was not a hundred and thirty pounds, they needed to add weights.

Quote:
HOW MANY CALORIES DO YOU BURN RIDING A BICYCLE AT 125 POUNDS
The average 125 pound person will burn 225 calories per hour riding a bicycle at a leisurely pace, 480 calories per hour mountain biking, 495 calories per hour riding a bicycle at a 12-14 mph pace, and 600 calories per hour riding a bicycle at a 14-16 mph pace.
How Many Calories Do You Burn Riding a Bicycle - Yahoo! Voices - voices.yahoo.com

I tried finding something more official, but it quickly became frustrating.

I do not have any idea how difficult it would be to pedal a velomobile, although I would assume that it would be easy to maintain 15 MPH.

A ham sandwich has 352 calories (Ham and cheese sandwich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

If we can use the 225 calories-per-hour figure, a velomobilist could theoretically ride 23.5 miles per ham sandwich (MpHS).

I admit defeat.

According to this, a ham sandwich is 337 calories:
Calories in Wawa - Ham Sandwich | Nutrition and Health Facts
LHV of gasoline is 44,400 kJ/kg with a density of 0.74 kg/L. So it woorks out to be:

88 miles/gal = 1 miles/ham sandwich

PAC CAR II uses a hydrogen fuel cell and two electric motors.

Microjoule uses... who knows? The first dozen articles I looked at were more worthless than used toilet paper. I think that one is gasoline ICE @ 8914mpg U.S. gallons.

I tried looking up the car also, but did not find anything useful.

According to Wikipedia:

Quote:
Microjoule is a team that builds ultra-efficient vehicles. It is composed of students and advisors at Lycée La Joliverie in St Sébastien sur Loire, France. The team has broken the world record for most efficient gasoline-powered vehicle three times:
1999: 9,845 miles per gallon (approx. 23.891 ml / 100 km).
26 June 2001: 10,227 miles per gallon (approx. 22.999 ml / 100 km) at the annual Shell Eco-Marathon competition.
9 July 2003: 10,705 miles per gallon (approx. 21.972 ml / 100 km) at the annual Shell Eco-Marathon competition.
13 July 2006: 10,127.9 miles per gallon (approx. 23.224 ml / 100 km) at the annual Shell Eco-Marathon competition.
March 2008 or earlier: 7,148 miles on a single gallon of fuel
I kind of understand it fluctuating from 9,845 to 10,705 miles per gallon, that is ten percent, and according to Wired,
Quote:
almost ten miles per teaspoon
Eco-Marathon 2008: Can Anyone Top 7,148 mpg? | Autopia | Wired.com sounds difficult to calculate.

How many meters per individual molecule of fuel?

How far are they driving anyway?

Why would they be 38% worse in 2,008 than 1,999?

I guess that I kind of understand, but I am not sure that I agree with this:

Quote:
Some of the rules for the event may encourage participants to enter vehicles that use hydrocarbon-based fuel sources. For instance, the Eco-marathon places solar-powered vehicles in their own class and are excluded from winning the $10,000 grand prize.

The conversions are simple and it helps to be one with the rest of the world sometimes.

Yes but if the claim is ">10,000 mpg" we ought to know the units since our predecessors were too stubborn to agree on a common system.
