Isn't stop and go traffic a kind of battery oriented demand? I suspect it is oriented towards electric useage as a primary power source until it needs the motor to recharge which would mean that it is primarily gas fueled on a long trip with short bursts of all electric for the duration of electric range thereby reducing the gas comsumption and increasing the reported mileage average.

Ideal would be to use electric for any low power demand situation, like steady cruise at 45 MPH or below. ICE is better used for acceleration and higher power demand. The whole idea is that ICE is inefficient at low load situations, while the electric is very efficient.

ICE at low load
AeroStealth put this to the test.
His 2014 Ford F-150 EcoBoost, crew cab, 4X4, with 6.5-foot bed:
22-mpg at a constant 62-mph.
32-mpg at a constant 35-mph.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The big issue is traffic light synchronization. There isn't any! The transient loads of stop-and-go driving rip an ICE vehicle a new one.
10-speed transmissions are two gears away from CVT economy, but there's only so much one can do.
That's why we have hybrids. BEVs are on the right side of the calculus as well.
ICE won't regen.

Not only due to a real CVT being less complex overall than some transmission with too many physical gears, but also due to hybrid systems often being capable of emulating a CVT, sounded quite predictable for hybrids to become a sensible option under a higher load which CVTs are often claimed to not withstand.

People always tell me that stoplights in Arizona are synchronized for the speed limit.
"Then why do you speed?"
[offended] "I most certainly do not!"
"Yes you do."
"Maybe 5 MPH."
"Five?"
"Okay, 10!"
If they believe that lights are synchronized and they speed then they decide to brake for each and every light?
Dolphins really are the dominant species, right?

Paraphrasing some comedian, "Remember, if the lights are set for 25 they're also set for 50".

Interesting theory. Have you tested this?

Note that it was a comedian. It's beyond my reckoning.

Fwiw, yes it works at 50, 75, 100. Guess how I know? I suppose also at 12 1/2 but I won't go there.
Until they improved it, you could drive the McCaran loop in reno at the posted 50 all day long and never hit a red.

First longer trip in the Pacifica. 260 miles total. It actually started out and did 40 miles pure EV which was great. That was the most "city" part, probably 20 miles stop and go around town followed by 10 miles of interstate at 75mph and then 10 miles on the side highway at 65 until hitting the first hill. Then the gas kicked on and off of the rest of the trip, side highways, 55-73mph. In the end the car says it did 82 miles EV and 178 miles gas. It only shows 20 miles of regen EV so the other 22 miles on EV must be when the motor is running it also is giving power to charge the battery some. I wish I could force exactly how much it would do that. Sometimes it seemed to push 15kw into the battery and other times it was using the battery to assist the gas even on flat roads. I wish it would just continue to fill the battery if I wanted but it never let's it get higher than 1% unless going down hill.
I didn't refill the gas tank to figure the MPG because I've had that gas in there for a month and 1/2 and know at some point I'm going to get a feul refresh mode that will always run the gas motor even with a full battery. Apparently adding about 5 gallons will reset that so I want the space. Also I suppose not carrying around a full tank all the time should improve EV range a bit
PS, that was 6 good sized passengers, some luggage, and running the AC all day at 69 while about 84 degrees and sunny outside.
