Cool. In the hands of an ecomodder, and If it's got a manual tranny, then it should blow the doors off the Smart, MPG wise.

You hit the nail on the head: manual transmission or bust. The smart is handicapped by its automatic manual.

Hi,
Are you sure that the 1.3L gets better mileage than the 1L? The 1L is about 95HP, so the difference may be in torque.
The iQ has 3+1 seating -- the front passenger can move ahead of the driver, making room behind for the 3rd adult. The child has to sit behind the driver.
It is ~10" longer than the Smart, and they made room by placing the steering and HVAC unit up in the center of the dash, having a very compact transmission and final drive, and the gas tank is under the front seats. There are 9 air bags, including one in the rear window.
It is also wider and lower than the Smart, and it has front wheel drive, which is a great thing, IMO. Weight is ~1,850 pounds. Selling price is supposed to be ~$13.5K, which is reasonable. Five star European crash ratings also are a plus.
Edit: the 1.33L engine will have Start/Stop technology:

Crazy all right - Crazy BAD.
I've gotten over 38mpg in my truck, which also has only two seats...and a gigantic parcel shelf out back.
Sorry, but when smart's best effort weighs half as much, has half the power, carries less than half as much, demands premium fuel and benefits from 20 years of technological advancements but still can't do more than 20% better than my carbureted old dinosaur, I just can't be impressed. I'm disappointed. They had all kinds of opportunity to run a monster touchdown, and they punted.

To compare it to the effort you put in your truck, we have a member here who got 65 mpg in one of those. Most people with gas logs show averages >45 mpg.

That is what I thought when I saw the vehicle from the front, lol.
and for $15K you can buy a Cobalt XFE and carry more people/payload. But I can understand if they're trying to shoot for the younger more minimalistic crowd that just want to cruise around and bring a friend or two.

Yeah, when I had a CRX, I never had to worry about being the "limo car" for my pals. It was the perfect car for me at the time. Probably still is, if they bothered to make a new one. It definitely makes sense for it to be a Scion, but I would call it a Scion Xq.
