Very creative design. I could see something like that happening. Can you come up with an example trailer hitch connection, and maybe make the top transparent for rear view?
I would ditch the "inner door" and make the top or side openable/lockable on it's own. That way, the interior "rain integrity" of the iQ would not be compromised. What I like about the trailer hitch is that it would increase the effective carrying capacity of the "boxtail" (ha ha, that's what I would call it).

There are several suppliers of swing away hitch mounts to choose from. They make them for enclosed cargo boxes, bike carriers & wheelchair platforms. You could purchase the swing-away frames only & add your own vehicle specific aero 'boxtail' design.
I initially designed it with clear windows but then the economy of manufacture becomes cost prohibitive because of the complicated clear lexan compound window forms. The least expensive proposal was a FG box with a simple interior door for security reasons & the ease of access to the vehicle's rear hatch. The design clears the existing turn/brake lights (must add CHML) and holds the plate.

Thanks for the details. There's a lot more to your pictures than meets my eye.

It looks like it improves aerodynamics. Then why make it removable at all?
When I saw the Scion iQ, my first thought was "You could put a good boattail on that, and it would still be easy to park." But would you get better results from just teardropping a 3 door Yaris with a Sawzall?

Jalopnik - Scion iQ Concept: Three-Seat Smart Fighter - Scion iQ Concept
Just found out the Cali-tuner company that designed the concept. Five Axis is famous with the Scion/Honda/import tuner set with its custom widebody & highly tuned aftermarket concepts. The OEM body will probably not look like it but serves the 'F&F' enthusiasts' inspiration as the next 'halo' icon. I follow the richest car-culture environment and follow close every kind of local sect. (Azn/Euro tuned & styled, lowrider sleds & rigs, hi-lifts, rockcrawlers, mudders, sandrails, ratrods, oldskool hot rods, classic muscle, etc...as well as solar cars, gravity racers, electric-cng-biofuel-hydrogen-etc conversions or eco-cool & eco-green tuned) Dirty-South donking is the only one that is rare here.

Has anyone in America actually been into that pokemon/fast-and-furious look since the 1990's?
I know I'm well on my way to "old guy" status... but I had no idea I was that disconnected....

Wake up Rip V. W.! The latest box office success over the weekend was 'Fast and Furious'. The line went around the corner at our local theater and the parking lot was full of car clubs' latest glo-painted, flat painted, op art'd, stickered, CF'd, rust patina'ed, etc, vehicle of every kind. The night glowed with all the HIDs, exterior & interior LEDs, and the eerie barely audible but tactile subwoofers' humming. Local cops kept everyone behaved.

It's not a pokemon. . .this is definitely a Chiuhua. Nothing against small cars, but its a small car. It shouldn't want to look or act like a big car or a Murcielago Reventon. . .
