So - No - the contact patch is not the same with the same pressure and load.

Oh, and tires do NOT behave according to classical friction theory. Tires generate their highest grip at 10% to 15% slip.
Saw that. But it was talking about lower pressures and for two motorcycle tires, which are very narrow. I'm wondering how big the disconnect is for square shouldered radials.

Though the article doesn't list all the "large & narrow" sizes, I wonder if this is related to the upcoming VW XL1 release... The sizes on the VW aren't very tall but they are friggin' narrow! (115/80R15... narrower than my motorcycle tires!)

The VW XL1 uses Michelins, I think? The fronts are as you say 115/80R15 and the rears are 145/55R16.

VW's of old, and Volvos and Saabs used 155/80/15's for a long time.

Yup, two of my diesel Rabbits did. The third one had the "big" size, which was 175/70R15.

@Frank Lee, your cat cracks me up.

Actually 115/80 is rather tall, as is any tire 75 form factor and better, gone are the SR days, too bad those were better tires.
