The Volkswagen XL1, a production vehicle available in Europe, has Michelin Energy tires size 145/80R15 on the front
Which you won't find on Michelins website though.

Heck, I could run these on the Dwarf with suitable rims !
6.5J is going to be too wide to fit 145s.
Maybe on a 5J with a bit of a stretch.

I'm not sure where you found the quote. I believe it is 115/80 R15, which is narrower than the 125s that the Renault 2CV used.

Over the years I've run 145s on 5.5 inch rims. To mount them you shake the tire up and down as you apply the air and eventually they pop on. It makes for really aerodynamic sidewalls.

So it is. Can we say then that the article is in error?

Did I mention that I had a really nice set of Klebers (european manufacture, before they went to an American plant for domestic sales) on a '57 Beetle that I left out in the country, sitting on Willamette Valley soil instead of gravel? The dirt ate the tire! One of the 145s. It only took a couple of years.

Be careful here. There is a difference between the allowable rim width (the rim widths the tire manufacturers approve) and what you can make the tire fit on. Using rims outside that allowable range can cause issues.

Using overly wide rim width is called "stretching" and results in basically stiffening the sidewall. It can cause a small improvement in RR and handling - BUT - it really hurts the ride, somewhat hurts traction and wear. In extreme cases, the beads pop off in turns - very bad.

Well what did you mean by this? It pretty non-specific. I also look forward...to the tire's availability. I was just...well, you know...

CapriRacer -- Agreed. Aero and 'turn-in' vs ride and wear.

yes, availability in the future. i like tall and skinny but low weight. the tires i run now are the best i can get right now, due to the limited sizes available.

The elephant in the room is where are we gonna get a wheel that fits this tire? And can you make a lightweight 19 inch wheel? If you've seen the BMW i3, thats some serious "pimp your ride" bling!
