One thing that surprises me is how some stationary engines, with a much older tech than automotive engines, are proportionately so much more expensive. So, would it be totally out of question to buy a random econobox, parting it out and keeping only the engine and a few parts which could still be useful to build a stump grinder?

Well it looks like a stump grinder, it just needs wheels.

But what surprises me the most is how anything below 122cu.in. for such segments is usually a boat-anchor, even though most automakers could easily market their own engines for special purposes too. It's also worth to notice the retail network of mainstream automakers has a greater geographic coverage than specialty-machinery dealers.

That VW logo magneto would be just the thing for a classic Cal Look Bug. They ran Joe Hunt magnetos in Southern California.

Well you could buy a Joe hunt, the VW ones were unobtanium. I remember someone modifying a Bendix long shaft but that ended badly and the advance on a 009 is non existent.

Magnetos are interesting, no wonder a motorcycle ignition usually still resorts to it. And even though aircraft engines with FADEC use electronic ignition, the permanent-magnet alternator which feeds both the ignition and fuel injection is usually fitted in a way similar to how the old-school magnetos used to be.

I took the stump grinder out and used it to mow down weed trees. It works on small trees too, so now I don't even need a chain saw for the small stuff.
Main disadvantage of mowing over trees with the stump grinder is the trees try to fall on me.
Man it drinks gas, it runs wide open all the time.
I changed the oil, I only have about an hour or 2 of run time on it but what ever this engine was used for before I bought it, it was ran hard the oil was black and metalized looking. I got no problem changing the oil a few time to hopefully flush out years of psst neglect.
It's like I built a miniature version of the machine in the movie fern gully that clears the rain forest.
