I was using the stump grinder to mow down trees again. One tree was a bit too big and the stump grinder tried to climb it. Yeah I'll be using the chain saw on one's much over an inch in diameter.
If the wood is still green the stump grinder decimates the stump fast. But a lot of stumps are standing dead wood.
It needs more power. About double. I'm thinking predator 670cc 22hp.

Skateboard chain tensioner?
This is one of the reasons I avoid high speed chain applications. Seems like it would work great for belt drive too. Chain drive shines in lower speed higher torque and in timed applications.

I took the stock Honda muffler off and replace it with a 1 inch straight pipe that's about 2 feet long.
Definitely has more power. Doesn't make me want to install a 670cc predator engine every time I use it.

But I think I will get a 459cc predator engine and under drive it some more. Right now the peak cutter rpm is about 2,800, I put a bigger pulley on the front and further underdrive it to about 2,400rpm.

Put the bigger pulley on the cutter head. Was under driving it 80% now under driving it 66%.
Definitely cuts better with more torque.
I did buy the harbor freight 459cc. It's on sale for 10% off through October 3rd.
Will put the 459cc on soon.
Also working on a better intake.

Now is 3 more horsepower and about 70cc more going to be enough or will I be wanting more, like a second cylinder, 200 more CCs and about 7 more HP.

You may find that more hp is always the answer. Thought you have BTDT with your vehicles.

And OMG… that’s exactly what I’m picturing as I visualize this beast and your experience of using it based on you’re description. 😂
You have much better means than I do.
Ive primarily painstakingly used pure blood sweat and tear operated limb snippers/ hand saw,
eventually I upgraded to a sawzaw and chainsaw;
if it’s a big leftover stump, start a burn pile from said endless, fruitfully growing stupid pokey, prickly brush so as a cool 😎 byproduct you create…. flexible options to where you’d like to have a bonfire.(!)
Yeah it probably won’t be completely gone cos the stuff burns up quicker than the stump does, and it’s not really pretty, but it’s nicer than being swallowed by briars, and good things there’s never ending supply of brush so some day the stump might actually be completely burnt gone 🥲

It appears that the properly jetted predator 459cc is using about the same or less fuel than the rich running Honda gx390.
Read your manuals.
I got the Honda gx390 used for a hundred bucks and I didn't even know if I could get it to start so I can't complain.
My problem here is there's burn bans that last up to a year at a time and old timers speak of a fires that get down into stumps burn along the roots and then popping back up some where nearby. I believe that I have witnessed that this year as a roadside grass fire burned some trees. Then about 3 days later another tree was randomly on fire in the middle of the burn patch.
