I'd dig out the root ball, cut the major roots and use the weight of the trunk to lever the root ball above ground level.

I took my stump grinder to do a job, 6 stumps, 3 to 7 inches in diameter, the stump grinder put them all about 7 inches below grade in less than 20 minutes. Made $100. The guy dug out one, about 6 inches in diameter with hand tools and an engine hoist. Said it took several hours. __________________ 1984 chevy suburban, custom made 6.5L diesel turbocharged with a Garrett T76 and Holset HE351VE, 22:1 compression 13psi of intercooled boost. 1989 firebird mostly stock. Aside from the 6-speed manual trans, corvette gen 5 front brakes, 1LE drive shaft, 4th Gen disc brake fbody rear end. 2011 leaf SL, white, portable 240v CHAdeMO, trailer hitch, new batt as of 2014.
