“There’s a mixed feeling out there among auto recyclers,” said Jennifer Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Automotive Recyclers Association. Under the law, the engine of each "clunker" must be destroyed by a process that involves pouring sodium silicate, known as liquid glass, into it until it ceases to operate.

In addition the drive train cannot be sold without being disassembled. Those two parts typically yield 60 percent of the profit from a recycled vehicle.

Thus, a lot of used car dealers seem to be sending them to the scrapyard instead of auto recyclers.

my grand father took part in this, for a few months before he wanted a new truck, he wanted a tacoma, (new) i had been searchig before this program but his requirements hurt, he wanted a excab/4door tacoma 4x4 v6 auto with towpackage. everyone was 28+ for one. well after i told him he traded in his 92 f-150 4x4 i6 auto, (14 mpg) the truck had a bad egr and a/c compressor went out. so he said what the hell lets ditch it,.. so with 154k on it, he bought a trd sport dub cab tacoma 4x4 auto (18mpg combined). he got 3500 from the goverment, 1000 incentive from toyota, and put 2 k down and got his payment where he wanted.

now he gained 6 mpg average.


also he needed a truck that could tow 4000k lbs, he has a tractor he pulls. and 4x4 is a must here in the winter.( he also has a matrix)
