The people who let the reserve diminish are the ones that don't want to take advantage of the current pricing.

It would be colossally stupid to not fill our strategic oil reserves with domestic oil at $20 a barrel while the domestic oil industry and the domestic workers crash. Then, when we need the oil for a future emergency, we buy foreign oil at $100 a barrel from our friends in Russia, Venezuela and the Middle East.

Right now is the best time for the government to buy anything at all that isn't perishable. Borrowing costs won't get lower and there isn't much lower for purchasing costs to go.

Stupid question: is there any room in the reserve to store more? AFAIK, it was mostly full.

https://ycharts.com/indicators/us_en...roleum_reserve

Down from 695 million barrels in 2016 to 635 at present. Topped up it would be 727 million per Wikipedia.

I disavow Permalink #53.

The oil is stored in salt domes of fixed capacity.Unless Congress authorized increased capacity,or an executive order were directed towards it,we'd be stuck with whatever the current volume is.
One thing though,as we move more and more into smart weapons, the military's and strategic manufacturing needs for petroleum only decrease over time,so top planners may see no need for enhanced capacity. That's way above my pay grade.

When I boughr my 06 Subaru Forrester XT (Big body WRX) the other contenders on the lot were a 4 door Baja turbo (Ute bodied WRX),and the big dog the STI(race quality sadan). My terms were simple to my wife it's going to have a turbo and at least two doors we have a kid so 4 is better but negotiable. She said its your birthday(28) so you pick your first brand-new car... my decision came down to the cost of ownership through insurance rates, vs fun Factor

The El Caminos and rancheros did not originate on subframe based platforms , the early ones were based on cars with body on frame. Therefore that argument the Avalanche isnt a bird of the same feather, is not valid.
There was a market for theas ute's in the 80's the Baja appealed to me greatly because growing up I saw so many Volkswagen Pup(?)( About the only diesel on the market that wasn't built to haul and Abrams tank and slowly ) Subaru Brat, and they were diffrent.

It's a skin style not a frame spec.

Why pickup trucks ever strayed from the passenger car silhouette remains a great modern day mystery.
Too much lost payload landing on the hood as car tops got shorter,is my guess. Basically they haven't strayed from the stereotypical three-box sedan. A tool that compromises one ability to excel at another ability is considered a specialty tool that is a truck, the modern ute is a truck that has been castrated. E.G. the current offerings ,
