If they're encouraging people to buy electric vehicles they are doing a really bad job.
You can't drive a gas burner or a diesel, then they turn off the power....

These corrupt and/or tragically inept politicians think that complex problems are best solved single handedly by them by micro solving the micro problems that spring up as unintended consequences to the previous problem they just "solved".

If people were exposed to real time pricing and had a reliable means of being informed, there wouldn't need to be any "nudge" to "help people make smart choices". Those willing to pay a premium for expensive power can have all they want, and those who can delay consumption until it's cheaper can save.

In a similar vein, the $7,500 regressive federal EV tax subsidy which was a colossal failure is seen by some to to have only been a disaster because seven-and-a-half-thousand dollars wasn't enough of a nudge to get people to buy them. The solution to a very bad idea is to increase it to $12,500. While we're struggling to think of worst possible ideas, I propose that any EV buyer get a free helicopter.

I'm vexed knowing that more than a couple people on earth believe these politicians are genius saviors.

Did you read the article or just the headline?

From the article:

Owners will be able to override the preset time

and

Public chargers and rapid chargers, on motorways and a-roads, will be exempt

Basically the UK wants home chargers to be programmed not to charge during peak times in the morning and evening but owners can do whatever they want. This is basically making delayed overnight charging the preset option instead of relying on owners to manual program the charger to do delayed charging.

There is also set to be a 'randomised delay' of up to 30 minutes if there is high demand from motorists.

Under regulations lodged with the World Trade Organisation, new chargers in the home and workplace will by default not operate from 8am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm.

Electric cars have been forecast to create extra 18GW demand for power in UK at peak times by 2050, according to the National Grid. That is the equivalent of six Hinkley Point nuclear power stations.

Last week the government announced laws to ensure electric car chargers are built into all new homes and offices, in a bid to increase the numbers.

Ministers have admitted that only around 500 plug-in points are being installed every month – way below the 700 a day industry bodies say are needed .

The pen is powerless. The words written only have the authority granted by the will of people.

Take the "idea" of "forgiving" student loan debt. If anyone thinks they are going to coerce me into paying for someone else's bad investment, they've got another thing coming.
